I want to know how can I check if a surgeon is board certified? What sources can I use to find out if a surgeon is legit?

To become board certified you are required to undergo appropriate training in your speciality and pass rigorous test. It may take over a decade in some cases before you reach the end of training. The best chance to be operated by some one that is well versed in the procedures is to be operated on by a board certified surgeon in the field you are seeking help.

you can find listing of all the board certified plastic surgeons at the official website of the: American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Good luck

It all depends on the area of the body that you want plastic surgery performed. You can go to the America Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) website an you will find that there 24 board recognized by it. Officially the ABMS certifies as board certified plastic surgeons on the face and neck only 2 specialties. One is the Otolaryngology board, the other one is the Plastic Surgery board. The ABMS only certifies for body plastic surgery the Plastic Surgery board.

If your physician answers this question stating that the Plastic Surgery board is the only one that is certified by the AMBS to be able to do plastic surgery, they are hiding the fact that the ABMS also certified Otolaryngologist to be able to perform officially Plastic Surgery of the head and neck and that would tell me a lot about their character and integrity.

Otolaryngologists can also do a extra one year fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery after their 4 year residency training. After this fellowship they can have a board certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Hope this helps clarify all of your questions,

You can go to the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and look your surgeon up. It will tell you if they are board certified and by what which board and field. The ABMS has 24 member boards and the only one that certifies plastic surgeons is the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS).

You may go to the American Board of Medical Specialties website and check your surgeon's board certification for free after registering.  If he is a plastic surgeon, he/she would also be listed on the American Society of Plastic Surgery website...good luck.
