Can Differin Gel 0.1% Cause Birth Defects?

Is there any concern of this acne topical causing birth defects if used before or while pregnant? If so, how long should one stop using this topical before getting pregnant?

Thank you for your question.  Differin should not be used during pregnancy.  It is pregnancy category "C" which means that animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.  No retinoids should be used during pregnancy.  Regards, Dr. Matt Elias
