I am having a mommy makeover. Can I go home he same day?

It is truly a case by case answer. Most of the time I prefer my patients spend the first night in a skilled nursing facility that caters to plastic surgery patients.  At such a place, you are monitored and medical testing is available if needed.  That being said, If you are a patient with no co-morbidities (medical conditions that elevate surgical risk), you're healthy, your procedure didn't require too much liposuction and you have a reliable person at home to help you the first day or two then the answer is yes. In short your wellbeing is the main concern and your doctor will give you the green light to go home if you are stable after the procedure and had no complications during the procedure. For the most part, our patients meet the criteria to go home after their mommy makeovers, but I still encourage them to stay in a proper facility if possible.

It's really up to you. Obviously, your surgeon feels that you are in good health and that is safe to send you home the same day. Which is done all the time. However, you might feel more comfortable having a staff of nurses looking out for you the first night. It's really your call. Best, Dr. Nazarian

Thank you for the thoughtful question.  You raise an important point that should never be forgotten in elective cosmetic surgery: safety first.  When deciding between outpatient surgery versus an overnight stay, factors such as anticipated surgery length, overall health of the patient, patient preference, anticipated recovery needs, support system, and length from home are all considered.  Mommy makeovers can safely be performed as outpatient procedures but you should discuss this decision with your surgeon.  Good luck!

Hello, when I am deciding whether it is safe to send a person home after surgery I consider their overall health, total surgical time, distance from hospital, support at home, and other factors. These are all considerations before making a final decision where to have your surgery.

In my practice we do a few mommy makeovers a week and they all go home!  As long as you are healthy and have no medical conditions then I dont think it is necessary.  Make sure you have someone to help you at home and you will be just fine!

Thank you for your question.   The answer really depends.  If your mommy makeover includes a tummy tuck and breast augmentation and you are young/healthy, it is very reasonable to go home if you are stable and your pain is well controlled.  My decision to keep patients is based on either 1) concern that underlying medical problems may make it less safe to go home or 2) if the surgery lasts longer than 5-6 hours.  If I expect the case to last longer, I will require my patients to spend the night to make sure they are receiving adequate fluids and making enough urine.  These longer cases also have more associated pain, so an IV pain medication will be very helpful right after surgery for patient comfort.  Best to discuss the risks and benefits with your surgeon.  Good luck. 

If a mommy makeover includes and abdominoplasty I keep nearly all of my patients overnight for observation. This however is not a standard of practice and should be discussed with your own surgeon.

Dear chudeb,      As a rule , all my patients are going home after their cosmetic surgery. However, I do not perform 2 painful surgeries like tummy tuck and sub muscular breasts augmentation at the same time.     In my 28 years of practice, I noticed that many patients over estimate their ability to recover quickly and safely from combined painful surgeries . Consequently, they stay in bed for long time without ambulating or using the breathing machine (incentive spirometry) or drinking water ( they do not want to get up and go to the bathroom...) . That can result in severe complications like blood clots or pneumonia etc.  "Better safe than sorry" .   Combining tummy tuck and breasts lift is ok,  as long as they do not surpass 6 hours of surgery, which is , statistically, associated with increased complications.   Always, consult with experienced board certified plastic surgeons who operate in accredited surgery center for your safety. Check the before and after pictures in the photo gallery, to make sure that they are numerous, consistent and attractive. Most patients can return home within a number of hours after a mommy makeover. The safety of this is determined by the plastic surgeon on an individual basis. There are many variables including the length of surgery, the amount of tissue removed, and others.
