Would an MRI scan or ultrasound be better to find problems with implants?

I've allergan textured biocell implants under the muscle they are firm in places the breast implants. Im wondering which would be best to find problems a mri scan of the chest or ultrasound?

MRI is the gold standard for implant surveillance. Manufacturers recommendation is for initial imaging at 5 years post op and then every 2-3 years after.

With regards to your specific question, I would recommend beginning with an in-person evaluation by your surgeon. This will allow them to determine if imaging (and what type) is appropriate.

As always, discuss your concerns with a board certified plastic surgeon (ABPS).

it depends on what is your surgeon suspecting. I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment, it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment or ask for a second opinion. Only after a thorough examination, you can get proper recommendations and advice.

MRI is the most sensitive test for evaluating breast implants. Other modalities are unable to detect issues with the implant capsule or evaluate for small leaks. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (i.e. FDA) recommends evaluating your implants with imaging approximately 5 years after implantation and then every 2-3 years thereafter.

Typically your surgeon will begin with an ultrasound of the breasts to determine if there are obvious concerns, such as rupture.  If needed, your surgeon can then order an MRI for more specific analysis of the breasts.

Regarding your biocell implants, symptoms such as late-onset swelling or firmness on one side or the other warrant further discussion with your plastic surgeon and possible referral for imaging based on clinical exam. An ultrasound often less-costly and quicker to schedule and complete than a breast MRI, and has minimal risks to perform. You could always undergo an MRI following an ultrasound if there are any concerning findings. I hope this helps answer your question!

Textured implants may be somewhat firm, but I suggest staring with an ultrasound. Then, add a mammogram and do the MRI if the radiologist requests this.
