Hydroquinone and acne scars

Hi Sam_04,

Hydroquinone (HQ) is essentially a skin lightener which works by inhibiting the skin from producing an excess amount of melanin. So if your acne scarring is associated with hyperpigmentation, you should notice a difference. Very diligent use of sunscreen, meaning apply every morning and throughout the day rain or shine, is mandatory. HQ, however, does not treat acne scars that appear as "indented acne scars". Laser resurfacing and/or medical microneedling are the treatment choice in that case. Photos could help me provide you with more assistance. Best of luck, Manish Khanna, MD

Improving PIH from acne with hydroquinone

Only the pigmentation associated with acne scars will improve with hydroquinone. The scarring is not treated with this. Scarring needs more aggressive treatment such as Infini, laser resurfacing, subcision, TCA cross. If it is just pigmentation problems, and it isn't responding, chemical peels and lasers might be needed.

Hydroquinone and acne...

Thank you for your question.  Hydroquinone does not treat acne scars.  HQ 4% treats hyperpigmentation, which is often times associated with acne scarring.  Typically it takes 8 weeks to see results and requires mandatory sunscreen to maintain the results.  Regards, Dr. Matt Elias
