Is Medrol beneficial if started after one week of Tummy Tuck, Lipo, hernia repair and breast implants exchange?

Hi Doctors.....Quick question.... My plastic surgeon's nurse forgot to give me Medrol prescription that I should be taking since day one of surgery..... I had Tummy tuck, Lipo, Breast Implants exchange. Very hard 4 first days and now I am on my 7th day post op and things are looking better. Now after a week she sent the prescription over but I am not sure if I should start since inflammation is now going down.... Is it going to make any difference after a week of surgery? Thanks

Quite the opposite, it will inhibit wound healing, which occurs by the process of inflammation, which is what medrol inhibits.

Thanks for your question. Corticosteroid prescriptions such as Medrol started a week after surgery as a routine is not likely to affect your swelling or recovery. Typically, that medication would only be prescribed if you were having some sort of issue such as a reaction to medication. Steroids can slow down the wound healing process, so you wouldn't want to take it unless your surgeon really feels it's necessary. I'd check w/ them. Best wishes on your recovery.

Medrol perhaps has an effect in the early stages to prevent swelling.However, you made it through the worst already.I would skip it.

Hi pjI am not sure why Medrol would be prescribed for routine surgery.  At one week after the surgery the swelling is already starting to subside making any benefit of Medrol, in my opinion not worth the downsides of the drug (which is not totally harmless).All the best.Sek

The value of oral steroid use during your recovery from surgery is debated by surgeons and many surgeons do not use them at all on their patients. The surgeons that do use them believe that the value is obtained immediately after surgery, whereas there is no data to say that there is any value to steroid use when started one week after the surgery. I hope that this helps you.
