When Can I Go Back to Work After a Tummy Tuck?

I am 35 years old and intend to get a tummy tuck. When can I go back to work? How long and why do I have to wear a compression garment after the surgery?

A: Recovery after Tummy Tuck

Most of my patients return to work 2 weeks after a Tummy Tuck.  By then most patients have all drains removed and though they can still be sore the pain is completely tolerable.  Every once in a while, I will have a patient who takes an additional week to recover but two weeks is the standard answer.

How Long Does Tummy Tuck Surgery Swelling Last?

I had a tummy tuck about 3 weeks ago.  How long should I expect the swelling to last?

A: Swelling after Tummy Tuck

The majority of your swelling after a Tummy Tuck resolves 6-8 weeks post surgery, however, you will continue to notice changes in swelling, overal body contouring and scar healing for up to one year.

Reach Weight Loss Goal Before Tummy Tuck Surgery?

I have lost 100 pounds so far and am planning on a tummy tuck. I have 30 pounds to go until I reach my goal weight of 135. Can I go ahead and get the tummy tuck or wait till I reach my goal? I'm very happy about the weight loss but I can't stand the loose skin.

A: It's ultimately your decision!

As long as you are healthy and your current BMI (Body Mass Index) is 30 or below you actually have two options.  1 - Have your surgery know but know that you may need some touch up or additional surgery after another 30 lbs of weight loss or 2 - Wait until you reach you goal weight and then plan your surgery.  I have done things both ways for my patients.  Some patients choose to have surgery now which gives them further incentive to continue towards their goal weight and some choose to wait.  Weigh the pro's and con's of each option and make sure your PS is also on board whichever option you choose.
