Do they dissolve or are they taken out? Do I have a choice? My friend had rhinoplasty last month and she had 16 stitches. She said getting the stitches removed was more painful than the surgery.
Typically two types are used depending on the saurgical technique. Permanent or dissolvable sutures can be used. Typically most rhinplasty is performed with long term absorbable sutures which dissappear over 6 months. By that time all the tiisue has healed in position and the suture is no longer needed. There are occasions where we will use a permanent suture for more long term security. Hope this was helpful.

Dear doctors, I just had a closed rhinoplasty done last week, it is beautiful and I'm so happy with it but I smoked 5 cigarettes today. I now have a little blue line at the bottom of my nose and I didn't have it yesterday. I want to cry because I have been given the most beautiful nose. I threw my pack of cigarettes away. I know I shouldn't have done it, and I won't do it anymore. I just want to know what to do. Could it have ruined the results? Please help.
It is unlikely that you did permanent damage to your nose with 5 cigarettes. But smoking does affect healing and the smoke irritates the recently traumatized nasal mucosa. I would not smoke. Donald R. Nunn MD Atlanta Plastic Surgeon.
I'm nearly six months post-op and I have a considerable hard bump where the bridge of my nose was shaved down. I suffered no traumatic bumps to my nose following my surgery. Is this a callous formation? or did something go wrong? I'm seeing my surgeon, but the soonest appointment I could get is a month away! The bump feels hard, like bone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
You may have callous formation after the original rhinoplasty or possibly residual bony hump. I would wait a full year before revision to give you to best chance of correcting the problem. Discuss this with your surgeon. Donald R. Nunn MD Atlanta Plastic Surgeon.
