When Can I Resume Exercise After Liposuction of Waist and Thighs?

I had liposuction over my saddlebags, abdomen,&outer thighs,& a little over my lower back. It has been 1 wk.I have been wearing the compression garment as instructed & had a small umbilical hernia repaired w 1 small stitch I started walking my dogs soon after the surgery. Nothing strenuous, just 40 min. Is that ok? I know I can't do any strenuous exercise for at least 2 wks I normally jog 4 miles/day, weight train,& spin on a bike. Do you think my swelling will take longer to go down?

A: Exercising after liposuction and small hernia repair.

First and foremost, you should talk with your surgeon and get their specific instructions on when returning to light, moderate and finally unrestricted exercise is OK.  Every surgeon is different about when they allow exercise to be liberalized.  In general, surgeons like their patients walking after surgery to minimize the risk of blood clots in the legs.  The progression to a higher level of exercise usually is around 4 weeks.  Putting any stress on your abdomen where the hernia was replaced may require at least 6 weeks.  Again, check for specifics with your surgeon about timing of return and what garments for support they wish you to wear.

Hoping Lipo in Abs/waist Will Increase Fat Stores in Butt. True?

I understand lipo will permanently remove fat in that area. If weight gain occurs, other fat storage areas will be used to store the 'new' fat. I store all my fat centrally on my abs/waist, which is unusual for a woman. If I have lipo in that area, will any excess fat be distributed in other areas such as my butt/breast/legs/arms, etc? This would be welcomed as I have an 'apple' body shape and as a woman I would prefer a more 'female' shape with larger rear and breast.

A: Fat doesn't "go" anywhere, but your proportions change.

Fat is not "redistributed " after liposuction.  When liposuction is done on an area of the body which is out of proportion to the other areas, some of the fat in that area is removed but some is left behind to give a smooth contour.  So your body proportions are now changed.  If you gain weight or lose weight after liposuction the proportions which you created after the liposuction will be the same but larger or smaller depending on if you gained or lost weight.  The example I give to my patients is to imagine you have a perfect hour glass figure except big bumps on your hips.  If these are brought into correct contour by liposuction, now you have the perfect figure.  If you gain weight it will increase the size of all areas so you will be slightly larger but the proportions will still be there.  The same is true if you lose weight.

How Long After Lipo Procedure Can I Go Back to Sauna / Bikram Yoga?

I'll be getting lipo done in my abdominal area soon. I enjoy sitting in FIR sauna sometimes for 20 min - a great way to relax & detox. I also do Bikram yoga several times a week. (Bikram is hot yoga 90 min long and is basically like a sauna). Just wonder for the lipo recovery planning, what would be the recommendation for when I can go back to: 1) just lie down in a sauna room for 20 min (no movement), 2) resume Bikram yoga? Thanks

A: Return to yoga and sauna is approximately 4 weeks.

Your surgeon will need to guide you as to when it is safe to return to the sauna and yoga.  This will depend on how fast you are recovering from surgery.  Usually at least 2 weeks is required before patients are allowed to begin to slowly increase their activity, besides walking.  This is to minimize the chance of complications in the tissues which are healing under the skin.  The sauna and the yoga are both very warm will dilate the blood vessels in your tissues and could increase the risk of bleeding.  The bending and flexing of the yoga could also stress the newly healing tissues.  Around 4 weeks, most tissues which are healing without complications can take on this additional stress without problems.
