Mole Removal Scar on Upper Arm 5 months ago I had a small mole removed on my upper arm. It has turned red and is healing very slowly. My doctor injected it with a steroid thinking it would speed up the healing. Now it is raised in the middle and sunken around the edges. It casts a shadow on my arm that makes it look like a dimple. It is far more unattractive than the small mole I started with. Is there anything I can do about it? I have heard of a Yag laser. Is there any chance it will heal on its own?

A: Laser treatments can help both the redness and the texture of the scar.

IPL or pulsed dye laser can help fade the color of your scar. It sounds like the scar by be hypertorphic or a keloid scar. These are much more challenging and may require numerous treatments. The steroid inject is a good treatment for keloids and hypertrophic scars, but may dissolve tissue around the scar. Precise injection only in the scar can still help reduce the bump without further dimpling around the scar. This is tricky business. See a dermatologist who is expert both in laser treatments and the treatment of keloid type scars.

Will Mederma Help Fade Scars Left from IPL used to Remove Moles? I got IPL done on some sun spots/moles and I was told to put Mederma on the places where the scab falls off and the skin underneath is pink. After some scabs fell off, there is still some brown pigment left and I wasn't sure if I should be putting Mederma on those too and if that will help fade the leftover marks because are those spots/marks considered scars? I looked up scars and it's defined as any injury to the skin? Are those marks considered scars then and will Mederma help fade them?

A: I am not sure that Mederma does anything more than a moisturizer.

Mederma needs a well controlled double-blind study to prove that it is actually effective in treating scars. I am not convinced.

Should I Worry that a Mole Right by my Hairline, my Forehead Has Become Tender in the Sane Area? I have had a mole right by my hairline since I was little. I am now 52 and the mt forehead area in the same general location of the mole has become tender to the touch. DO I need to worry?

A: Yes, if a mole changes have it checked by a Dermatologist.

Yes, if a mole changes have it checked by a Dermatologist. A change is a mole may be an indication of a skin cancer, so get your mole check right away to make sure it is not turning into a skin cancer! Get it done soon!
