17 Years Old (Almost 18) and Getting Rhinoplasty

Hi I'm 17 years old and I'm getting rhinoplasty this summer! I'm nervous about one thing: people noticing. If people at my high school find out, well lets just say it won't be a very fun year for me. I'm going to dye my hair a different color so people will hopefully think thats whats different about me. Do you think they'll find out? Also I'm taking 4 weeks off sports, is that ok? I can't really take off any more time then that :/

A: Ready for Rhinoplasty?

Sounds like you may not be ready to have a Rhinoplasty during your high school years. Dyeing your hair may be a good distraction, but it’s not the answer. These years can be difficult for teenagers who are self conscious about a particular aspect of their appearance. You may be surprised that some people may have a positive reaction. Rhinoplasty is a common and popular procedure during the teenage years. One goal with Rhinoplasty is to achieve natural looking refinements. Many teenagers welcome this change. Whether your goal is dramatic or subtle, find a surgeon who has your goal in mind. Four weeks off sports is acceptable, however, the bone is usually fully fused in approximately six weeks so just be careful.

Is It Possible to Get This Rhinoplasty Result ? (Before & After Picture)

Im 23 and my main problem is the hanging columella that shows too much of my nostrils, makes my nose go down, it's also too close from my upper lip. 1)It it possible to get close to the result like show below ? 2)Is it possible to lift - SLIGHTLY - the upper lip by raising the columella? When I put my finger on my columella and that I raise it, it makes my upper lip raise too, does it work the same ? Im scared that after rhinoplasty, there will be too much space btw my lip and nose. THANKS !

A: Matching Photos for a Rhinoplasty Result

When looking at these photos, yes, it is possible to come close to achieving those results, though not exactly because your nose is uniquely yours and not recreated with imaging software. However, using photos like this can be useful for determining your goals and for communication with the surgeon.

I would suggest on a nose like yours, removing the small bump on the bridge, narrowing the boney portion of the nose slightly, elevating the columella, and rotating the tip upwards with a slight thinning/reduction of the tip (ball).  This would increase the visual space from the front view between the columella and upper lip which might appear to lift the upper lip, but actually would not. The goal would be to make your nose harmonious and proportional with your other facial features.

Is It Difficult to Get Better Results when the Nose is Thick?

Hello, I'm considering to undergo a rhinoplasty surgery. My nose is pretty thick, and the tip is bulbous. Is it more difficult to get good results in such a case? Many Thanks Mark

A: Thick noses present a manageable challenge in Rhinoplasty

A good result depends on your expectations. Yes, a thick nose does present challenges if you want a much smaller refined nose. In thick noses the lower third can be refined by altering the cartilage. The thickness of the skin also determines how much the tip can be narrowed. When looking at your nose, the dorsum would also need to be lowered and the nasal bones narrowed to maintain a natural appearance.  I do think you would see a nice improvement if you proceed with surgery. You should visit a plastic surgeon where you see many before and after photos of persons with thick noses to form a realistic expectation.
