After my Lip Lift, Will my Upper Lip Still Continue to Rise or is This It? I'm at Day 11. (photo)

My lip looks shorter right after surgery, and now it just appears that it's continuing to drop. My doctor told me that most people's lips will rise as the swelling goes down, but mine appears to be doing the opposite. Is it that after the initial swelling, the lip drops, and then as time goes on the skin tightens and it rises? Am I jumping the gun?

A: Lip Lift: Plumps & Pouts, but for a Price

Lip Lifts are great procedures...but only for the right individuals.  These tend to be women with thin lips and long distances between the bottom of the nose and the lip itself.  When executed correctly on the right patient, the upper lip will appear fuller, with greater volume, and slightly rolled out with a bit of a pout.  Plus the shortening of the nose/lip distance has a distinct rejuvenating effect, and patients look younger afterwards.  If someone's upper teeth are always hidden, a lip lift will reveal them.  All this WITHOUT the "duck" of an injectable lip augmentation in the office!  But the Lip Lift has its own price.... namely, the scar, and the healing time.  The red incision ultimately fades relatively quickly, but despite a careful closure the scar is still frequently noticeable by patients (not others, but patients themselves).  Even with postop dermabrasion, there can still be a subtle irregularity that can be visible.  Thankfully, it does gradually disappear with time.  The other shortcoming is the learning curve to do these procedures.  Surgeons often need to take more skin than one might initially be comfortable taking in order to achieve a lasting WOW outcome. But patients need to understand that the more skin is taken, the more likelihood of scarring.  Patients also need to understand that once the swelling disappears (3 months), they might miss the volume they had when they were swollen and will probably want to undergo Juvederm or Restylane injections to keep the volume where they want it.  So just like anything you do, keeping those lips ready for action will likely require a bit of maintence along the way...

Lip Lift Possible Despite an Overbite?

I would like to get a lip lift because I have a long philtrum that makes my face look older and less proportional. Although my upper lip covers most of my teeth at rest, when I lift it slightly it becomes overly protruded, the tops of my teeth show, and I look like a horse. I then realized that I have a mild overbite and protruding maxilla. Having said that, my question is this: if I correct my occlusion with orthodontics and orthognathic surgery, would it be possible for me to get a good result from a lip lift? Thanks!

A: Consider lip augmentation after lip lift

A lip lift will help correct your long philthrum after corrective orthodontic procedures. With a excessive length of the maxilla, orthognathic surgery and orthodonture may be necessary.

A lip lift by itself may not correct thin lips that lack projection. Consider Juvaderm injections or Alloderm implants to the upper and lower lips to arrive at lips that are plump and full in their appearance.

Plastic Surgeons Specializing in Upper Lip Lift in Pittsburgh?

I'm looking for a plastic surgeon who specializes in upper Lip lift (gull wing) in the Pittsburgh, PA area. Do you know anybody who's done those before and is recommendable? Thanks a lot.

A: Lip Lift in Pittsburgh

Have you thought of extending your search area? While I don't know of anyone in particular in Pittsburgh, there are those of us in Baltimore that perform this procedure frequently. Just a thought, but you can see photos of this procedure on our website. Good luck!
