I was curious during the process of a tummy tuck, do you actually cut and remove part of the abdominal muscles or just the skin on top?
When a patient undergoes Abdominoplasty the surgeon will lift the skin to expose the abdominal muscles. At that time your surgeon will examine the muscles to see the degree of tightening needed. The muscles are not cut. Instead, using special suturing techniques the muscles are tightened by plicating them together. Excess skin will then be excised and resutured to leave you with a flatter abdomen. I would make an appointment with a board certified plastic surgeon to see if you are a candidate for abdominoplasty.
Are there times after the recovery period has ended that a patient may want to wear the girdle again?
After tummy tuck there will be a significant amount of swelling so I recommend using two items, an Abdominal Binder and a Compression Garment. The Abdominal binder should be used for two weeks post surgery and the Compression garment should be used for 6 weeks following the binder. The difference between the two is the abdominal binder is more of a tight thick band that uses Velcro at the side and securely holds the drains in place, while the Compression garment is more comfortable and form fitting. After the initial recovery time, there may be times when to feel a little more swollen than usual. This is normal and it may feel better to wear the Compression garment for a little while. Be sure to follow up with your plastic surgeon if you have any other questions or concerns.
Exercise Before Tummy Tuck ? Sit ups / Crunches etc Yes Or No ? Is Surgery more Difficult to perform ? Thank You
There is nothing wrong with exercising prior to a tummy tuck. Losing as much weight possible before the procedure will help give you optimal results. Often times the tummy tuck is being done because the abdominal muscles are weak, so exercising will not really help. If you do choose to exercise, don't over do it right before the procedure so you will not feel any soreness. Also be sure to discuss it with your surgeon to get his or her recommendations. Good luck!
