I am 50 years old, lost 80 pounds over several years through low-carb, and have been 15 pounds shy of "normal" BMI for over 6 months now (155 pounds at 5'3"). Looking at my pics, though, I sure don't feel like I'm anywhere close to normal and wonder if this is "close enough" for good results. I'm looking for less abdomen, less saggy inner thighs, and "shorter" breasts (not bigger, no implants). Is my wish list of procedures appropriate for me at this time or is more weight loss necessary?
Dear Looking4change,
Congratulations on your weight loss and the success you have had keeping it off. The frustration you express about not seeing the results you want in a mirror are common after massive weight loss as the skin and soft tissues often cannot retract or shrink to match the weight change.
From your photos, you appear to be a good candidate for a body lift which will tighten both the abdomen and the lower trunk/back and also a breast lift and medial thigh lift. However, the only way to truly determine this is to have a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who does this type of surgery. If you are healthy and cleared for surgery by your primary care doctor, then you should do well.
Regarding the timing of the procedures, I would suggest separating the procedures into two stages: first performing the breast lift and body lift procedures and then at a later date, performing the thigh lift. In my practice, I find the combination of a body lift and medial thigh lift slows the recovery which increases the risks of complications.
I hope this helps and best of luck.
Through diet and exercise, I have gone from 48% body fat to 15% body fat. I am planning on a body lift over the summer, and had the goal of getting to 8% first (I'm a 34yo man, 6'0", muscular). Here's my question, I've been given estimates of a total weight loss of 20-30lbs during the surgery. How much of that is actual body fat, and how much is skin, connective tissue, etc.?
Dear Plaidly,
In a body lift procedure, the only tissues removed are skin and fat. The muscles and other deep tissues are not removed.
Im willing to fly to anywhere in th US to have a full body lift done at one time....I understand it would take a team of surgeons to reduce operation time.
If you mean performing a "body lift" that includes the abdomen, buttocks, and outer thighs, there many plastic surgeons who will perform this surgery in one setting in most situations. However,if you are adding on the breasts, arms, back, and inner thighs on top of the other procedures, then there will far fewer surgeons willing to perform this amount of surgery in a single session. The issue is really safety which is the most important thing in any surgery but especially in elective surgery. The risks of excessive blood loss, blood clots, and post-operative complications increases dramatically and most surgeons do not accept the risk/benefit ratio.
Another important question for you to also consider is the idea of having your surgery in a site quite a distance away from your home. Unless you are planning to send many weeks at the place where your surgery is being performed, you may want to consider staying closer to home where you can be closely followed and any problems addressed very quickly by the surgeon that knows the procedures best since they performed them. Not all surgeons are willing to take on someone else's complications given the medical-legal climate of the United States.
Before you leap, please meet with a number of board-certified plastic surgeons who are experienced in managing post-massive weight loss patients to discuss your concerns and learn more of the risks and benefits of the procedures you are interested in. Best of luck and be safe!
