I'm sure that there are a lot of people out there with basal and squamos cell cancers out there. What really happens if they never get them removed?
Consequences of untreated skin cancer often depends on the type however squamous cell cancer untreated could spread and metastasize with very serious consequences, basal cell, rarely spread, but can be very locally destructive to underlying skin, nerve, muscle and bone. We dont recommend not treating skin cancer.
Skin cancer specialist advised marginally removing BCC, send me home with a hole in my nose, back next day, if biopsy ok, wound closed like an icecream cone, extending down the side of the nose and zig zag up between the eyes. This allows the skin edges to be drawn together. The plastic surgeon said that he would remove skin from my check and graft it to my nose. I see a dermatologist re MOHS surgery next week. For the least scaring, what's best?
The treatment of choice for skin cancer on the nose is Mohs surgery. If you want to minimize scar, this is also best option and have closure by dermatologicsurgeon skilled in reconstructive surgery.
How Long Does It Take to Remove 5 Layers in the Moh's Procedure
After each layer of Mohs, the tissue needs to be processed and placed on slides for the Mohs surgeon to read, this process can take 30-60 minutes depending on many factorsl. Therefore 5 stages would likely take 3-5 hours. However once all the cancer is removed after 5 stages in your example, the Mohs surgeon will then need to close the area with stitches which may take another 30-60 minutes depending on how complicated the closure is since they may need to perform a flap or graft skin from another area.
