Looking into Getting the Full Abdominoplasty but Worried About Belly Button. What Can I Expect? (photo)

Thank you all for your quick responses on my last question. I know that I need to get the surgery now, the only thing I am wondering is about the belly button scar and shape. My mom recently had her tummy tuck done about 8 months ago but her belly button hole looks SO small and is such a tiny circle, it doesnt look real. Is this normal? because I have seen it often and if I am going to go to the lengths of this surgery, I want to make sure I can have a tummy I can show off again. Advice?

A: belly button

You apppear to be a good candidate to undergo an abdominoplasty, and you are wise to scrutinize  how the  umbilcus is dealt with as part of the procedure. This si paricularly true if you expect to wear a 2 piece bathing suit.  There are many different techniques for designing the new umbilicus.  Some surgeons use a circular pattern, others use a diamond shape or a heart.  As far as the size of the umbilicus, I tend to err on the side of a smaller umbilicus.  As the area heals, the final size  may either stretch out leaving  a larger belly button which I think looks very conspicuous. Also, if you don't like the final size, it is much easier to enlarge an umbilicus which is too small than to try to reduce  one that is too large.

Mysterious Abdominal Distention After Abdominoplasty, What's Going On? (photo)

I had abdominoplasty/double hernia repair 16 months ago. Shortly after, I noticed severe abdominal distention. I look at least 6 months pregnant at all times. The gastro Dr. has ruled out everything under the sun and the plastic surgeon (who I no longer see due a failed breast aug he performed 3 weeks after my TT)has no clue. ALL Dr's agree there is a problem, but no one can seem to diagnose me. Has anyone seen this occur after a tummy tuck and last this long? I cannot live in this state!

A: Mysterious abdominal bulge (photo). How to treat?

The double hernia repair is the key, and indicates your abdominal wall is already subject to weakness.  Compound the hernia repairs with wide rectus abdominis plication accomplished during abdominoplasty, and the resulting tension exceeds intraperitoneal "eminent domain" and the pressure your abdominal wall deep connective tissue fascial layers are able to resist.  They relax to achieve a new equilibrium, which explains your distention.

Treatment is possible, and may or may not be successful.  Reoperation with elevation of the abdominoplasty flap, repeat plication, reinforcement with prosthetic mesh or acellular dermal matrix extending across the abdominal wall, and repeat skin removal to lower the scar as much as possible would be my choice.  Post surgical care involves wearing a latex free elastic binder snugly applied for three months (except when showering) to stablize the reconstruction.

Is my Belly Button Normal, I Had a Full Tummy Tuck? (photo)

I had stretch marks from pregnancy and underwent full tummy tuck. Results of stretch mark removal is great but I am more ashamed of my appearance with this belly button and will not dare wear a bikini. Original PS not responsive, did not have follow up visit etc... Went to additional PS, they state that this is NOT normal and cost to fix is high? What is in the range of "normal appearance" for this?

A: Belly Button Revision after Tummy Tuck

Thank you for your question and photo.

I believe that you would benefit from revisionary surgery to improve the appearance of your belly button.  I do not know how long ago you had your tummy tuck surgery but a physical examination is key before discussing the exact procedure with you.

Visit with well experienced plastic surgeon's who can show you examples of their work.

Best Wishes!
