I Am Unsure About my Surgeons Preferences in Where to Place Butt Implants- Does It Sound Good?

I have corresponded with a surgeon Im interested in about butt implants and I am unsure about whether this surgeons technique is ideal. The surgeon said that he uses round implants for everyone, and does not shape them as this is the ideal shape for most patients. He says that he places them above or below the muscle on his patients, depending on the patient. He uses a semisolid implant made by AART and performs this surgery 3-5 times a month. Am I in good hands, in your opinion?

A: Buttock Enhancement, Choosing a Surgeon

I am going to tell you what you may not hear from others.  Currently the only two safe and effective methods for Buttock Augmentation are Autologous Fat Transfer (transfer of your own fat to the buttocks, aka "Brazilian Butt Lift") and Buttock Implants (semi-solid soft silicone rubber implants).  Both are very good options so what it comes down to, like any surgery, is proper patient selection.  Indeed because at least 50+ % of the fat transferred will melt away within a year, most patients are not good candidates because they lack an adequate amount of fat to harvest.  Thus buttock implants become a very good, safe, and long term reliable option for most patients seeking buttock augmentation (at least in my practice).  I personally recommend either the round or the oval shaped implants dependent upon the natural anatomic shape of the patient's buttock cheeks. The implant should always be placed under or within the gluteus maximus muscle.  In this position, the implant is less palpable, less visible, and does not sag over time unlike implants placed on top of the muscle.  Therefore it is extremely important to seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in this technique.  Additionally, in this type of surgeons hands the often quoted "high risks" of complications especially infection are actually much lower around 5%.  And finally, advocates of Fat Transfer only may not tell you that there is a risk of fat embolism which can severely effect your lungs and even kill you.  Best of luck...RAS

I Am Interested in Getting Butt Implants but Am Not Sure About the Surgeon. How Do I Build That Trust?

The surgeon I am planning to see uses round implants and does not shape the implants because as I am told, the round implants are the ideal shape for most patients. I asked how many patients the doctor has performed butt implants on and was told over 300 and the most in the USA, which Im pretty sure is not true. Should I trust this surgeon otherwise?

Is It Safe to Get Breast Implants and Butt Implants at Same Time??

Hi I am looking at getting breast implants and butt implants at the same time. Would this in anyway compromise the healing process or effect the positioning of the implants. Thank you.

A: Breast and Buttock Implants at Once

It is indeed possible, and I have done it many times, to have breast and buttock implants done in the same operation.  It is a little more cumbersome for patients to get comfortable post-operatively for the first week but I think most patients would prefer this inconvenience over having to undergo two separate recoveries associated with two different surgeries.  When patients have this combination of procedures they tend two find it most comfortable to rest/sleep on their backs with extra cushioning under their lower back and buttock.  Probably most importantly is to seek consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in placing the buttock implants under or within the gluteus maximus muscle  because relatively few perform a lot of these procedures.  Best of luck...RAS
