Hello, I recently had septorhinoplasty about a month ago and my nose feels strong. I did not have much swelling after the cast was removed. Can I re-start my amateur boxing career now?
I traditionally tell patient's it would be very wise and appropriate to avoid contact sports for at least 2-3 months after surgery. I would also suggest that you are putting yourself in a highly dangerous situation by boxing after a surgery of this type even 1 year out. But if this is your chosen career then have at it. But be aware that the likelihood of you needing more surgery at some point is quite high. And after a second injury you will likely need to undergo cartilage reconstruction with either rib or ear which would keep you out of boxing for an even longer duration. Bottom line: If your boxing career is more of a hobby then stop now and pick a different activity. If this is truly a goal you seek: just be as careful as possible but you may definitely want to wait a full 3 months before reengaging. But we all know...with enough force...anyone's nose can be broken. Take care!
I need a Septoplasty due to a broken nose. I am considering getting a Rhinoplasty at the same time too. I have a HUGE fear of being "put under". I'm also emetophobic as well and general anesthesia frightens me since I've had past surgeries and thrown up for about 2 days after. Can I get this done with local anesthesia? I really hope so because I don't think I will ever get this fixed if anyone won't do it that way.
The risk of anesthesia is the same risk as walking outside and getting hit by a bolt of lightening. Rhinoplasty and septoplasty are the single most complicated three dimensional procedure in all of cosmetic or reconstructive surgery. You will absolutely WANT to be under anesthesia during this surgery . Otherwise, the reality of the surgery will FAR outweigh your fears as it will come with significant discomfort during the osteotomies (controlled fractures), rebuilding process, and surgical bleeding that occur during the procedure. For someone that performs over 500 nasal surgeries a year....I have never once done this procedure under local and have not had any patient's experience what you have had. A gentle anesthesiologist is all you'll need.
How long should one wait between having a Septoplasty and a Rhinoplasty or Chin implant? I would like to have it all done at the same time, but my insurance will not cover a Septoplasty if it's done by a cosmetic surgeon.
You're insurance will cover the septoplasty under a plastic surgeon if that individual takes insurance. If they have chosen to not take insurance you may want to get another opinion. In my practice, I routinely bill the insurance carrier for breathing related surgery if we are to also do cosmetic surgery at the same time. They will cover time in the OR for the septoplasty and pick up a majority of the fees for the anesthesiologist and facility. Then a cosmetic fee is billed separately for the rhinoplasty. In this scenario, it is very important to find a Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon/ENT to do the procedure at the same time. This will save you time, money, and hassle in the recovery period. If you have no choice but to proceed in the manner you described...get another opinion...it will be a far better outcome if the nose is accessed once and not twice!
