How Noticeable Are the Scars After an Otoplasty?

I want a permanent fix for my "dumbo ears" (big and sticking out) because I'm sick of wearing hats to cover them up and it seems like otoplasty is my only option...but I am afraid I'll end up more self-conscious about my ears if there are scars there plus everyone will know I had ear surgery.
What I want to know is - Where do they cut into you during ear surgery and are the scars really noticeable?

A: Scarring is usually minimal with otoplasty surgery

The incision for otoplasty surgery is carefully placed in the crease behind the ear in order to hide the subsequent scar.  Most of the time they heal very nicely and are very difficult to see because of where they are placed and because the ears are pulled back closer to the head so that it is hard to see the area where they are placed.  Although some people will know that you had surgery, they will eventually forget about it and chances are you will feel better about yourself.  There is nothing wrong with having a relatively minor surgery if it makes your feel better about yourself and improves your self-confidence.

Pixie Ear Repair

How can a pixie ear be corrected? Can it be made to look like the other normal ear, or does the other ear need to be fixed as well to match the corrected pixie ear?

A: Pixie earlobe deformity can be an easy fix

Pixie ears can be a congenital condition or can result from improper positioning of the earlobe at the time of a facelift. In either case, correction can be as easy as a minor office procedure with buried sutures and minimal if any scarring. I would recommend leaving the 'normal' ear alone and only having something done to correct the pixie ear.

Bad Otoplasty? Opinions Please!

Had otoplasty performed, hoping to correct my protruding ears. After the procedure, my ears now have a "telephone" look, in which the middle portion is pinned, but the top and bottom portions are still stuck out. It has only been 3 days post-op, and my doctor says the "C" look will correct itself as the ears "spring" back out a few milimeters...but from what I read online on one post, most who receive this look immediately post-op, will have it stick with them for the most part.

A: Ears still prominent after otoplasty

You are correct that your results will not likely improve over time. Even if the sutures pinning down the middle of your ears do relax over time, the top of your ears will still be more prominent than they should be.  Excess projection of the tops of your ears is easily seen in your picture, the bottoms are harder to see.  Correction of the upper part of the ears is usually done by re-creating the superior crus on the antihelical fold which is generally lacking or deficient in patients with prominent ears.  It appears in your case that this was not adequately performed and may need to be re-done but you should wait a few months before having another procedure.
