Sagging Breasts: How to Perk Things Up

after babies and i guess aging :( my breasts sag more than i'd like. is breast lift or plastic surgery my only option for getting them perked up again?

A: Sagging breasts- How to Perk Things Up

It depends on how much sagging you have. If you only need a few centimeters of lift, this can be accomplished with an implant. If you have a moderate to significant amount of sagging, an implant will just make this worse especially if it is placed above the muscle. The only way to significantly perk up your breasts and to have long lasting results is with a breast lift.

Scarless Breast Lift

I'm sort of on the verge of needing a breast lift and wondering if the scars are not worth the trade-off... what kind of incisions or techniques leave the least amount of scarring?

A: Are the scars worth it for a breast lift?

In general, smaller lifts leave smaller scars, larger lifts leave larger scars. The smallest lift is a 'crescent lift' which leaves a scar along the upper aspect of the edge of the areola but only raises the nipple and areola a little. A periareolar lift leaves a scar around the entire edge of the areola and can raise the nipple and areola several centimeters but may have a flattening effect on the breast. A 'lollipop' lift is like the periareolar left but adds a vertical scar which can extend from the bottom of the areola down to the crease under the breast and can elevate the entire breast to some degree. Finally there is the full or 'anchor' lift which elevated the entire breast on the chest and leaves a horizontal scar along the crease along with the 'lollipop' scar.  Keeping all of the sutures under the skin so that there are none to take out can reduce your scars by not leaving any stitch marks. I have my patients tape over their scars for several months which can also reduce scarring.

I Have Had 3 Seperate Breast Lifts- Areola is Still Much Larger Than I Want, What Are My Options?

Could I have a 4th surgery and still be safe??? I have heard of blood loss? It has been 4 yrs since I had my third one. I love the shape of my breasts. Just not happy with size of areolas. This would be the 4th surgery on the areola...help!

A: Areola reduction with breast lift surgery

Thank you for your question. Reducing the size of the areola is typically a standard part of breast lift surgery. It is rather unusual to require the procedure four times unless your areolae were very large to begin with. Blood loss is not much of a problem with a breast lift. Loss of blood supply to the nipple and areola can be a risk and is much more of a concern if you are a smoker (quit anyway if you are!).  If you have had a full lift or a 'lollipop' lift in the past, you should not need any new scars to get your desired result.
