Dr. Tells Me Gentle Yag Doesn't Work on Gray Hair. True or False?

1. The doctor tells me gentle yag doesn't work on gray hair. True or false? 2. I have a very heavy, thick, hard beard, half of which is gray. Doctor tells me I need gentle yag over the entire beard at least 6 times to get rid of all the black hair. True or false? 3. Lastly, she says treatments would be once every two months to hit all hair in anogen stage. True or false? Thanks, Eugene

A: Gentle YAG and gray hair No hair removal laser works on gray hair including the gentleYAG. With hair removal, several treatments spaced 6-8 weeks apart are typically necessary to get the best results in hair reduction (for the darker hair - no response expected for the gray).

Does the Nd:YAG Laser Actually Remove Hair Efficiently and Permanently?

Given that melanin absorption at 1064nm is very low I am surprised that hair removal is possible at all with the Nd:YAG laser. Can anyone claim to have achieved 'good', long-term results with any Yag system?

A: YAG systems do induce long term hair reduction

The literature and our clinical experience do support the use of Nd:YAG lasers for hair removal especially in darker skin types.  Although multiple treatments may be necessary and results can vary substantially, our clinical experience is that we have induce signficant long-term hair removal/reduction in many patients.

Although it is true that  YAG-generated laser light is comparatively less well absorbed by melanin than shorter wavelengths it is still absorbed somewhat selectively at the level of the hair follicle.

Can the Erbium Yag Laser Be Used Safely on Silicone-injected Skin?

Does anyone know if Coherent Erbium-yag can be used safely on silicone injected skin?

A: Erbium Yag Laser on filled skin should be no problem

There are studies out there that the use of lasers and other fillers are safe. Although silicone injections are not prevalent in the US, this same principle applies. The lasers and Intense pulse light do not penetrate deep enough to effect the fillers including silicone fillers. Silicone fillers are also more resilient than other dermal fillers such as restylane, juvederm, etc.

Consulting a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon would be something that I would recommend. We specialize in the face and are highly qualified to help you with this.
