Which is better to use after having dental implant surgery to deal with pain: cold compresses or heat? I like to use natural methods of pain management as much as possible.
Ice is mother nature's anti-inflammatory and can be extremely effective. It should be used in cycles of 15 min. on, and 15 min. off for the first one to two days.
In addition, several medications can also be extremely effective. Dexamethasome is a steriodal anti-inflammatory that used in conjunction with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, such as Motrin, will very effectively reduce post-op pain and swelling.

I had a crown a root canal and crown placed on #14. I have had complications due to an abscess caused by an unsuccessful root canal. I was told by two dentists that i would need a apexectomy to and a new crown which will cost over 2000. Apparently, there is no guarantee it will work. I'm thinking of getting an implant. Should i extract tooth or wait to see cosmetic doctor?
This is a fairly common scenario that we run into on a daily basis . We need to consider if it makes sense to try to save this tooth . If it's easy to see why the root canal is failing that it may make sense to redo the root canal .
If the root canal seems to been done well and there's no obvious reason why it is failing, then an implant may make better sense .
If the infection has destroyed a significant amount of bone then a bone graft may be required. This may be done as a separate procedure prior to placement, or it may be done at the time of implant placement.

What other procedures might be advised because missing teeth for a smile makeover? Will gums need surgery too? Are dental implants low maintenance and fairly low risk for long term complications?
Here are some of the factors that you need to consider when you want to decide if dental implants are good option to replace missing teeth as part of a smile makeover:
-are the roots of the adjacent teeth far enough apart to have room to place an implant
-is the width of the bone thick enough as you go from your lip to your pallet
-do the adjacent teeth have any gum disease or bone loss
If other factors are good but there is not enough bone then a bone graft may be required.
If you are cavity prone, dental implants may be a wonderful option, because a metal implant will never get a cavity.
Hope you find this information helpful.
