I had some remaining amount of lymphatic malformation and older scar tisse removed from inside my upper lip. It's been just over 2 months post opp and the numbness and feeling has gotten better, but there is still some residual swelling/inflamation mainly when I move my mouth and eat. Pretty uncomfortable as it happens everytime I eat and drink and takes time to settle back down. Could this be nerve damage? What can I do to treat this? Thank you.
There could be some residual scar tissue in there that is getting inflammed when you are moving your mouth a lot, like when you eat. Pressure, irritation, etc. can cause the area to re-swell and become irritated. Make an appointment with the physician who performed your surgery so you can be evaluated. It's probably not nerve damage, but it's best just to be seen.
Can an old scar be removed? I had a surgical operation when I was 6 years old in my tummy and now I am 23 years old. The scar on my tummy is about 5 inches long. I also have a scar from chickenpox on my face. Prevention or treatment of the scar while it's healing isn't an option anymore. Is it possible that these can be removed? What kind of treatment would you recommend and how much will it cost? How long would the treatment be?
Scars are permanent. As plastic surgeons, we try to hide them in lines that people normally have. Most plastic surgeons will wait at least 10 months to a year before attempting surgical revision as the scar needs to be mature before surgery. The problem with surgical revision is that there is no guarantee that the new scar will be better than the scar that you have right now.
There are other modalities that might help. discoloration may be treated with laser therapy. Hypertrophic or keloid scars may be treated with injections of medicine.
Always best to see your board certified plastic surgeon and see what would be right for you.
I've always wondered if fillers like Restylane, Perlane, and Juvederm can help with an indented surgical scar left from a scar revision surgery on the cheek?
Yes, this may be one modality to correct scars. With a filler one injects the selected substance into the scar to reduce the indentation or, "valley". This can help decrease the noticeable appearance of the scar.
There may be more than one modality that would work best for that particular individual. Always best to see your board certified plastic surgeon, dermatologist, or otolaryngologist to see what is right for you.
