Both of my breast had radiation thearpy due to breast cancer. I'm going to have a biliteral mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction (DIEP) with skin sparing. Is this a good thing to do with radiated skin? I had my !st radiation in April of 2001 right breast, and the left breast in March 2011. I suffer with Lymphedema in both arms due to lymph nodes removal, and how will that affect the breast reconstriction and me afterwards? Will the swelling in my arms get worse? Please help!!! 3rd time breast cancer survivor. Thank you very much, Ms. shon don
Breast reconstruction may be performed following radiation. Typically, we perform flap reconstruction (ie diep flap) in this setting.
I had double masectomy Sept 29 and expanders at same time. Have had much pain with right expander and must have 30 radiation treatments after chemo is finished. Radiation therapist now says expanders should never have been put in when radiation is going to be needed. The left tumor was 7cm and right 3.5cm. What should I do?
in certain instances, tissue expanders may be placed at the time of mastectomy for women who will be undergoing post-mastectomy radiation therapy. Although the expanders may be removed and replaced with a woman's own tissue (abdomen-diep flap, thighs-tug flap, buttocks-sgap, back-latissimus or tap flap).
I have had a bilateral mastectomy. I have under the muscle silicone implants. I had radiation treatment on the right breast and the implant is uncomfortable when using my arm and my muscle is very tight. Is it best to have my implants placed over the muscle? I had gone through the expander process before the implants.
In general, there is a higher chance of scar tissue forming around breast implants following radiation therapy. Other techniques for reconstruction (flaps) may be helpful. Tissue from the abdomen (diep flap), thigh (tug flap), buttocks (sgap), or back (latissimus or tap flap) may be used to reconstruct the breast.
