Confused About Artefill - Permanent or Not?

Hi! I'm really confused about Artefill haha. I've read that artefill is a permanent filler, yet it last for 5-10 years. I also read another question on this site where a patient was complaining about his/her artefill disappearing in a month. The doctors said that the collagen gets absorbed, but does the absorption really make it go away that much? I'm looking to get artefill injections for my nose (already had radiesse before and liked it!) Please lemme know, thanks!

A: Permanent doesn't really mean permanent, sometimes

Artefill lasts 5-10 years, which is long enough to call it a "permanent" filler. After all, your facial contours continue to change over that period of time and the need for additional correction may have little to do with what was done 5-10 years earlier.  Most people who need a touchup years after having Artefill placed find they only need a very small amount.

Be sure to see someone who has a lot of experience with Artefill.  Permanent fillers can cause permanent problems.

If Artefill is Permanent, Why Did Mine Disappear in One Month?

I had acne scars and they raised them with the Artefill. They said to come back in 30 days to get more. It took 3 weeks to get the results. My scars looked filled in almost all the way and then it all disappeared. Very frustrating. Thank You for your time.

A: Artefill disappearing

The materials contained in a syringe of ArteFill include PMMA which is the permanent substance, and bovine collagen.  The amounts are 20% PMMA and 80% bovine collagen.  What most likely happened is the collagen that was making up some of the volume that filled the acne scars has been absorbed.  That is why it seems like it went away.  You will likely require more to get your desired result.  Be patient,  ArteFill is more of an injectable IMPLANT than a filler, so slow and steady is better.  If overfill occurs with a product like this, it is very difficult to correct.  Hope this helps.

Will Artefill Migrate and Move to Other Areas?

If I have Artefill injected into my nasal folds, can you tell me if Artefill will move anywhere throughout the body or is it permanently stablized in the nasal folds?

I am very interested in this product since the Restylane injections seem to fade out after 6 or 8 months. I just want to be sure that once injected correctly, it will no move to other parts of my body. Thanks.

A: Artefill does not migrate in the facial tissues

ArteFill will not migrate from the area it is placed. The body grows its own collagen around the ArteFill beads (PMMA) and hold it in place. It has been brought back to the market by Suneva Medical and is again available. I have had very nice long term results with the product and patients love the value of a long lasting filler. I will primarily use it in the laugh lines or the marionette lines. It does require a skin test to the collagen component of the product for possible rare allergy.

Best regards,

Dr. D.
