Is breast revision required for lateral displacement? (Photo)

I am 31 years old and had my breast augmentation done 5 years ago. I have started to become more and more aware of my lateral displacement, which I notice mainly when laying on my back. Is this something that can be corrected?

If it is bothersome enough, lateral implant displacement can be corrected by reinforcing the outer implant pocket. Often the tissues have thinned, which expands the pocket and allows the implant to move. In that situation addition of a layer of support with a Galaflex internal bra or something similar is helpful. Of course natural breasts move to the side a bit so you have to decide if it is bad enough to have an additional surgery.

Hi.  Thank you for your question.  Yes, this is something that can be treated.  It will require a surgery to close off the extra space within the lateral aspect of the implant pocket.  This can be done with a combination of cautery and suturing techniques, called capsulorrhaphy.  In some situations that are more severe than yours, other methods, like the use of Galaflex for extra support, can be used.  But I don't think yours will require that.  I hope that helps. Thank you for your question. It is not uncommon for implants, especially that are placed under the muscle, to start to migrate laterally. This will be more noticeable when laying down. Of note this is also seen within an augmented breasts. Treatment for this can be to perform a capsulorrhaphy either with sutures or an energy device in the operating room. As this is likely to recur over time, I would not recommend undertaking this surgery until it is becoming nearly unbearable for you. Good luck.

Thank you for your question. A large portion of my practice is dedicated to revision breast surgery. In your case, I would recommend suturing the lateral/outer portion of the pocket - capsulorrhaphy and opening up the center portion of the pocket-capsulotomy. I get this problem all of the time. Typically, its from women who went with high profile implants. This is a problem because while they project more, they are narrow at the base and can have widening effect on cleavage. The second most common problem is incomplete release of the pectoralis muscle medially. Many surgeons don't take the time to make this right. If you're not happy with your results I would suggest you to discuss it with your plastic surgeon.

Yes lateral displacement can be corrected, but it is addressed surgically.  The lateral aspect of the breast pocket will be tightened which will keep the implants more centrally positioned.  See a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.

Lateral displacement can be surgically fixed by tightening your lateral pocket. Until then, wear underwire bras, and wear a very good support bra that does not allow much movement at all when you exercise.
