I have had silicone implants under the muscle for 5yrs and have developed capsular contracture in one and now want to explant (may reimplant at a later date). Is it necesssary to do a complete capsulectomy? If I leave the scar tissue in, what are the risks if any?
If you only want to remove the implant and not replace it at the same setting, then capsulectomy is not necessary. If you want to replace the implant, then you will need either a complete or partial capsulectomy. Another approach would be to create a new pocket (neopocket) between the muscle and the scar tissue capsule. Your surgeon should discuss all your options during your consultation.
I was told that the doctor made many incisions in my scar capsul instead of removing it. But from day one it was extremly firm and imoveable. I could feel only one place where there was an incision and that is because the implant is actually poking through and you can see the implant bulging up through the scar capsul.
There are many ways to perform Capsulotomies. It is very difficult to know where the Capsulotomies were done by examining a breast. Performing Capsulotomies has less morbidity than Capulectomies but has a higher recurrence rate of contracture. On your next visit to your surgeon, I would address all the concerns you are having.
My doctor thinks I have a ruptured implant, gave me a referral but she only sees patients with cancer. The symptoms are quit severe and the pain is in my armpit aswell. How do I find a doctor experienced with explantation surgery. My research makes me believe that the implant has been leaking for several years and that the silicone could also be in my breast tissue and possible heading for the lymph nodes. I fell on breast a few years ago. It has been since then problems. Can you help me?
There are many experienced breast implant surgeons in your area who are well qualified to assist you. If you need a referral you can contact the American Society of Plastic Surgeons or the American Society Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
