A: Mini-Tuck Right For Me?

Dear kat2,

From your photos, it appears that a significant portion of the fullness in your lower abdomen is due to seperation of your lower abdominal muscles, a leftover from your pregnancies and something that cannot be corrected through diet and exercise alone.  You may benefit from a limited or mini-tummy tuck where the lower abdominal muscles below the navel are tightened and a limited amount of extra skin is removed.  Often liposuctioning is added to help contour and shape the results.  The only way to really be certain is to have a consultation and examination by a board-certified plastic surgeon who can advise if a mini-tuck may work for you  or if a full abdominoplasty(tummy tuck) is best.

I hope this helps and best of luck.

What Kind of Abdominoplasty Could Work for Me? (photo)

Had twins, now my belly looks like shown. Considering ‘having it fixed’/improved. Not so much concerned about belly’s flatness (or lack thereof), it’s more the extra and torn skin I’d like to get rid of! Is it possible to fix this? Would that be a full TT, or mini? I keep reading a mini TT doesn’t do much/doesn’t take out enough skin, on the other hand I’ve seen those hip2hip scars from full TTs that .. aren’t overly pretty either. I do have a C-sec scar though, could the surgeon work w this?

A: What Kind of Tummy Tuck For Me?

Dear KateAUS,  As a father of twins, I wish to welcome you to the club!  Thanks for the photos since they really do tell the story of your worries.  Because of all of the stretching your skin and soft tissues experienced with your pregnancy, most plastic surgeons would recommend a full tummy tuck to achieve the result you are looking for.  This would repair the muscles that have been displaced from the pregnancy and then remove the excess, loose skin and fat.  While the incision is longer than a C-section, it still can be hidden under most clothing, swimsuits, and undergarments.  Think of it this way, you are making a trade.  You are getting rid of something that is very hard to hide under most clothing and swimwear for an incision that can be covered and will fade as it heals.  Please discuss your concerns with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can better advise you on  your options.

Good luck with the twins and enjoy them.  Hope this helps.

How Far Up Do Mini Tummy Tuck Sutures Go?

In a mini tummy tuck, do the sutures finish just before the belly button, or do they finish under the belly button?

A: Mini-tummy Tuck and Sutures

Dear Purplearms,  This is a hard question to answer since there are so many variations of mini-tummy tucks out there.  In most techniques, the incision is very low, just above the pubic area, and horizontal, side-to-side- not up and down.  This allows the incision to hide in swimwear and undergarments.  On occasion, the plastic surgeon will tighten the lower abdominal muscles through this same incision but those sutures are deep under the skin and fatty tissues and not on the outside.  Typically if these muscle tightening sutures are used in a mini-tummy tuck, they run from the navel down to the pubic bone.

I would recommend consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon who can better address your concerns after a complete examination and medical history review.  Hope this helps and best of  luck.
