Question

I’m almost 6 week from Surgery and just started getting some irritation with the end of my scar. It is sore to touch like if there was a pimple or ingrown hair. What could this be?

Thank you for your question.  It's hard to determine from the pictures.  Some patients don't dissolve the sutures 100% and they start to work themselves out.  I would recommend you follow up with your surgeon to be evaluated.  Best of luck to you.

This area is in the pubic area where we often see inflammation around the hair follicles. It does look red and likely tender. You may need an antibiotic. I also recommend warm soapy water and massage in twice a day. You should run this by your surgeon.Best of luck!

This may be a suture abscess or potentially an ingrown hair.  Either can be addressed in your surgeon's office.  Minimal home care may be needed but it should heal quickly once treated.  See your surgeon for an assessment.

angie,Your surgeon would be the best one to ask as they can examine you to see exactly what is causing the redness and tenderness.  That being said, whether it is from a hair or a stitch, you should be using warm soaks and probably an oral antibiotic as well.Best of luck.Dr T

Thank you for the question and photo.  It certainly can be that you have an ingrown hair or other form of inflammatory process.  At 6 weeks out, early infection from surgery is unlikely and things like ingrown hair or long-term dissolvable suture knots start being more common.  Your plastic surgeon will be able to take a look and guide you with respect to any potential treatment.All the best,Dr. Remus Repta

Difficult to say exactly what this is. It could be a folliculitis (infection of hair follicle), a suture that is working it's way out, or a similar process. It is likely that this area will heal well on it's own. However, if it persists or worsens you should contact your surgeon.
