I've been researching BA's for a very long time now and have heard that some women find themselves in alot more pain than others. And the tightness of the muscle can be a factor. Should I stretch my chest muscles before my surgery to prevent my doctor from having to work with tight muscles and could this also shorten my healing process?
Answer: Chest weight lifting does make the operation more difficult You do not need to stretch your muscles out. You are correct however that working the muscle out and making it thicker does make the operation more difficult and might result in more pain. So as long as you have not been doing chest press you should be fine.

Answer: Exercising before breast augmentation I don't believe any exercise you do to prepare for a sub muscular breast augmentation would alter the postoperative discomfort. Surgical technique is probably the most important factor for reducing pain. See a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your expectations regarding this postoperatively.

Answer: Breast Augmentation Pre-Surgery Stretching Although it's always a smart idea to be in the best possible shape prior to any surgery, muscle tightness and healing time post breast augmentation are mostly affected by the size of the implant and your body's own personal healing process. Larger implants typically take longer to heal and "drop" into the pocket than smaller implants.

Answer: Chest stretches before breast augmentation? Thank you for your excellent question. Though it is always best to have muscles that are not in spasm and tight as a result of exercising, the surgical creation of the implant pocket is not affected much by stretching before surgery. The "tightness" of muscles after surgery, and as a consequence healing time, is more likely related to the size of the implant selected than the muscle. Larger implants tend to require more time to settle, and the overlying skin to redrape, then smaller implants. Hope that this helps.

Answer: Pre-Stretching the Chest Muscles Does NOT affect the Recovery from Breast Augmentation As you probably know post surgical pain is Multi-Factorial. It is affected by ethnicity, sex, age, gender and surgical technique, As regards Breast Augmentation, precise handling of the muscles, avoidance of injury to the muscles by pulling and blunt dissection, avoidance of injury to the underlying rib cartilages have yielded much happier patients. There is NO demonstrable evidence that pre-stretching the pectoralis muscles before the operation would result in any benefits in pain relief or faster recovery.A better exercise is choosing both the proper surgeon and the proper implants. These choices WILL largely determine your shot term discomfort and your long term happiness with your surgery.Good LuckPeter Aldea, MDMemphis, TN
