Perceived recovery time after the BBL varies based on a few different variables. The type of anesthesia has very little impact on how many days you need to recover. Anesthesia for the procedure it’s just that it’s anesthesia for the procedure. Don’t confuse how the anesthesia is done to recovery after surgery because they are not related. Recovery from liposuction and fat transfer isn’t terrible. Most people feel sore and stiff and swollen. This is typically significant for the next 2 to 3 days and by the fourth day patients feel better. You’ll still be swollen and you’ll still be sore for several weeks after the procedure but by 5 to 6 days you should feel much better than the first two or three days after surgery. A week is probably sufficient for most people to go back to low impact daily activities. If your job is very physical, then you may need more than one week off. Some people feel like 2 to 3 weeks is sufficient amount of time while other people go back to work in 3 to 4 days. Ibuprofen is typically enough for pain control. Recovery isn’t so much about hurting as it is being uncomfortable.Expect to feel very stiff and movement is uncomfortable. Typically gets easier day by day and buy one week you’ll still be sore, but it should be very tolerable. By far the most important variable is getting a good assessment regarding your candidacy for the procedure, and choosing the best provider. Choosing the best provider in my opinion requires having multiple in person consultations. There are significant differences in outcome and depending on who does your procedure. Delivering consistent quality liposuction and fat. Transfer results is more difficult than most people think. The number of plastic surgeons with truly mastered these procedures, and can do flawless work without leaving any contour irregularities is relatively few. In the end, there are only two variables that determine what the results will look like. The first is your candidacy for the procedure. Not everybody is a good candidate for either Liposuction or fat to transfer. The second variable is the skill of the provider. You need to get a good understanding of your own candidacy as well as interviewing enough surgeons to have a good sense of who can do the best work. I recommend starting by having at least five in person consultations. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection of before, and after pictures of patients who have similar body characteristics to your own. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing the best results of a providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of what average results look like or how many procedures anyone surgeon has actually performed. For fat transfer make sure you know exactly how long after the procedure the pictures were taken. Early fat transfer results can look very impressive but do not in any way represent final results. It takes 3 to 6 months before fat transfer results are final. Looking very carefully at all areas treated with Liposuction to make sure there are no skin contour, irregularities anywhere. Poorly done Liposuction can leave people disfigured and is virtually impossible to correct. An experience provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 sets of before and after pictures of the BBL procedure.Make sure you have a full understanding of exactly what areas will be treated with liposuction, and what areas will be included. I generally recommend treating the entire torso as a single anatomic unit. by treating the entire torso, patients are left with a natural, even thin fat distribution without transition zones between treated and untreated areas. A full torso includes upper abdomen, lower, abdomen, love handles, always, full back, and under arm area all the way to the side of your breast. I do not recommend rushing into decision-making for procedures that are permanent and irreversible. You’ll be reminded of the outcome every day for the rest of your life. Choosing the right provider is by far the most important variable, and this takes time. If you’re up for going with the corporate clinic and make sure you consult with the provider who’s going to do your procedure and make sure you see before and after pictures representing the work that that provider has actually done. Do not assume anything when it comes to having consultations and scheduling cosmetic surgery. It is your responsibility to properly vet plastic surgeons to find the best provider. Doing so requires taking an active role during the consultation process. Being board-certified and plastic surgery with years of experience, and an overall good reputation, does not mean that somebody has mastered either Liposuction or fat transfer. Mastering these procedures requires a total commitment to excellence and years of experience having performed thousands of cases. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
