Yes, swelling can be typical. Icing and cold compresses may give improvement. I would wait a full 2 weeks before judging the results. If it is after the two week wait, you can have the filler reversed with hyaluronidase.

It's too soon to tell what your final results will be. You have swelling, which can be asymmetrical, and last 1-2 weeks after lip injections.   Swelling is normal with lip fillers. The swelling can last  1 to 2 weeks. Sleep with your head elevated .Ice on and off the first day can diminish swelling and bruising. Evaluate your lips after 2 weeks...if need be adjustments can be made in your filler.See your injector at that point if any adjustments are needed.

Swelling can be extreme sometimes after filler in the lips. Typically the onset is about 4 hours post and slowly subsides over several days. Based on the immediate after photo, (which looks good), it appears that you are in the "extreme" swelling category. Sometimes Prednisone can be prescribed to reduce swelling faster. There seems to be quite a lot of swelling for just 0.5ml of Juvederm. It also depend which type of Juvederm was used. I would recommend cold compresses and antihistamines for 24-48 hours until it settles down.
Another question is if you are allergic to the lidocaine in the product or the product itself although allergies to HA fillers are rare.

Swelling is common after lip injections and can persist up to two weeks.  You can use ice intermittently on the area and keep your head elevated on a couple of pillows at night for the next few days.  If after two weeks you still have concerns, return to your injector for an evaluation.

The first 24 hours after lip augmentation are the most crucial ones. If your head is not elevated your lips will swell significantly. I find that in the majority of my patients the swelling goes down in 4 days. But in many patients from other doctors I have seen swelling lasting as long as two weeks which is considered to be a norm. Good luck from New York City

Swelling for several days after lip injections can be completely normal. The lips are a very vascular area (lots of blood vessels) making soreness, bruising and swelling occur after any kind of injection. If you are experiencing severe pain that is not improving, or becoming worse as time goes on you should contact your injector. Otherwise, just use cool packs about 10 minutes our of every hour, try to avoid NSAIDS (ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve, etc.) as they can increase bruising and swelling. In our office, we often give five days worth of Arnica Montana to begin immediately after treatment. Arnica is a homeopathic remedy for swelling and inflammation, and is widely available as a tablet and a topical gel at most health food stores. Try to minimize strenuous activity, working out can make swelling worse. If you have any bruising, be sure to keep the area protected in direct sunlight (bruises can "tattoo" into the skin with exposure to the sun while they are healing).

0.5 mL juvederm is a very small amount. It appears that you have excessive swelling going on.  I would recommend ice (no more than 10 minutes at a time) and ibuprofen to help the swelling go down. Lip swelling is usually the worst in the first few days following injections, and there is a range of swelling - some people barely swell, some people swell a LOT. The 2 week mark after your injections are the final result. Follow up with your injector for any further questions/concerns. Don't worry, I'm sure it will look great after the 2 weeks.
