Is it safe to stop wearing compression garment 2 weeks after lipo?

Question

My plastic surgeon removed 1 pound of fat from my tummy & hip areas to use as filler around my implants (had breast cancer thus had radical mastectomy 5 years ago). After only 3 weeks, I feel great & no longer wear the spanx panties I wore the 2 weeks after the lipo / surgery. Is that okay? My doctor had suggested wearing for 4 weeks but I feel that if I feel fine w/very little soreness, why bother?

Hello and thank you for your question. In my practice we ask patients to wear compression garments 24 hours a day for 2 weeks post operatively. We ask them to continue to wear compression garments for 12 hours a day for the following 2 weeks thereafter, either day or night. The garments are used help to reduce swelling, however some patients feel comfortable wearing them. Wish you well.

In my opinion compressive garments are primarily for comfort and have no effect on the long-term outcome of liposuction. In my practice you would be permitted to quit wearing them if inconvenient at two weeks. Nevertheless, these instruction should come from your own surgeon.

It all depends on your physicians protocol and the type of procedure performed.  Standard tumescent liposuction often allows you to be back to the gym in 10-14 days.  However, Hi Definition VASER Contouring with chest surgery and/or muscular defining and fat transfer has much more downtime. I have my patients out of the gym for 4 weeks minimum and double compression with foam and standard garments.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Healing after liposuction k is usually pretty straight forward.  There is a process of swelling and bruising that peaks at 3 days after surgery and then undergoes the first stage of major resolution in the first 2 weeks after surgery.  The later phase of healing takes place over the 2-3 months after surgery where everything really settles and softens.  It is after this time that we are getting close to the final result, though this varies patient to patient.

I do not believe that continued compression will benefit your final results. For many patients, compression can be quite uncomfortable. You should definitely check in with your plastic surgeon for their recommendations and follow those closely.

I think it is fine to stop the compression at this point, especially if you are feeling no different with or without it. Some patients like the feeling it gives them for 4 or more weeks, but it is not mandatory that you do it. Best wishes.

Everyone has their own recommendations regarding compression after liposuction, which means there is probably not one right answer. Each patient is probably more unique based on the amount removed and their skin laxity, but we tend to always say the same thing. Honestly, you should do what your physician recommends, but I have never heard tales of complications from not wearing compression the last week or two after liposuction. Most patients actually find it more comfortable as time goes on and are reluctant to give it up because it makes them feel more secure.Best of luck,

Each surgeon has their own regiment for how do use compression garments.In my practice we ask patients to wear them for two weeks.If they find him comforting they can wear them longer. I don't believe extended use of pressure garments have any impact a long-term results.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
