Can a compression garment worn after lipo cause permanent indents?

Question

Hello, I had lipo of my abs, flanks, and lower back 3 weeks ago and have been wearing a compression garment since. I was wearing epifoam to protect my abdomen, but I broke out in a rash. My garment has a zipper in the front and when I sit down, it dents in. When I took of my garment yesterday, I noticed my stomach is indented in the same area the garment zipper dents in. Is this going to be permanent? Should I stop wearing my garment? I feel more comfortable with it on.

It's highly doubtful that a compressive garment has any long-term effect on the outcome after liposuction. If an ill fitting garment creates a crease this will correct itself in the garment should be adjusted so as not to re-create the problem.

Yes compression is extremely important including massage and radiofrequency treatments post liposuciton.  Garments not worn properly or with a foam pad have the ability to cause permanent irregularities.  Please speak to your physician if you are concerned.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hi! At three weeks post liposuction any indentations or irregularities are pretty much permanent without further intervention. Following liposuction the remaining fat is very malleable during the early recovery period and any sustained, irregular compression can cause surface deficits. That being said, the appearance can be improved with breaking up the fat, liposuctioning of the high points, redistribution and/or fat grafting. Consult with your board certified plastic surgeon for a focused exam and treatment. You should be able to get some degree of improvement. Best wishes!

Thank you for your question. Keeping compression garment is important after liposuction. But if it causing dents it can cause harm. So please avoid folds or buckles from garment on skin. Call and talk to your surgeon for instructions or they may advice to change to different garment.

I do not personally believe that indentations from pressure garments will have any permanent impact on final results. The temporary indentations simply represent more pressure over swollen areas. You may want to consider checking in what's your plastic surgeon. Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
