21 days post lipo & compression garments have caused deep dents on my sides. Is it too soon to stop wearing them? (Photo)

I am 21 days post op for smart lipo on my abdomen and flanks and I have large indents on my sides and my stomach is swollen. I am worried that my compression garment is too tight. My doctor advised me to wear one full body black garment that is similar to a body suit and a binder on my abdomen on too of the compression garment. The binder digs into my sides when I sit at work. Is it too soon to stop wearing compression garments? I had 3,000 cccs removed with the tumescent fluid and the fat.

First of all, the dance created by the compressive garment will be temporary. It's highly likely that if you discontinue use this will have any long-term effects. Alternatively a better fitting garment can be acquired. Specific management however should come from your own surgeon.

Healing after plastic surgery is a process and the earlier parts are the most challenging.  Emotions are a big part of the process as well.   Best is to discuss specifically with the operating surgeon so that he /she can take a look.

Compression garments help to squeeze out the swelling and shape your body, but must be used with caution as they can create permanent dents.  It is important that you rotate your garment frequently and massage all liposuction areas, otherwise these dents can become permanent.

I usually like my patients to wear a compression garment for 3-6 weeks.  Some surgeons do not have patients wear garments. Best to ask your surgeon what he prefers.

In my practice I ask patients to wear compression garments for two weeks.After that patients can wear them if they find them comforting.Each plastic surgeon will have a different view of how long these garments should be used.I don't believe that any indentation caused by pressure garments will have any impact a long-term final results. I have a times made small cuts with scissors in the compression garments to adjust the tension in certain areas.I recommend you review your concerns with your plastic surgeon.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.
