8 DPO Mommy makeover. Still terrible pain, numbness, swelling.

Question

It's a little after 3am and I'm up writing this in terrible pain. Today will be 8 DPO of tummy tuck without muscle repair, lipo of flanks and abs, and breast lift and Augment.. It seems most are off pain meds by now, I was trying to wean myself down to one tramadol every 6-8 hours. Took last one 11pm. Just took one Advil capsule and am icing my abs and lower back. Extreme tightness and numbness in lower abs. Losing original weight gain from op. Seeing PS tomorrow. Wearing compression garmet.

At 8 days post op it is normal to feel this pain and numbness, your surgery was a very big surgery and it will take time for the swelling and pain to go down, continue to follow up with your PS to discuss your concerns and talk to him or her in maybe changing your pain medication, best wishes.

Thanks for your inquiry and sorry for your struggles.  I am glad you will be seeing your plastic surgeon to be evaluated and make sure you are progressing well.  You may be weaning yourself off of your pain medications too quickly or too soon.  And also ask your surgeon if may be you need a muscle relaxer?  Hope for a speedy recovery.

SidneyLee. Sorry you are having such a hard time.  Best to see your surgeon for evaluation, but in the meantime, loosen your elastic garment or remove it for a while.  Pain can last this long, so hang in there and good luck!

A great deal of pain after 8 days is a concern. Please discuss this with your plastic surgeon in the morning. I suspect tramadol is partly to blame and may not be the best medication in your case. I suggest you speak to your surgeon about using alternative medications which are not controlled substances such as muscle relaxants and Cox-2 inhibitors. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thank you for sharing your question and I am sorry to hear of your continued discomfort.  Luckily you are seeing your surgeon today for an in-person evaluation as the pain does appear to be out of proportion for a skin only tummy tuck and liposuction.  There may be muscle spasming that would benefit from a relaxer, or a fluid collection that needs to be addressed.  Write down all of your symptoms and be sure to discuss with your surgeon.

Recovery is unique to each patient.  I'm glad to hear you are seeing your plastic surgeon as that is the person who can provide the best advice.  The pain should gradually improve with time.  The swelling will as well, but will persist for several weeks yet.  Continue to follow the advice of your doctor and know that you will be feeling better soon.

Thanks for the great question and congratulation on your surgery! A mommy makeover is a very big surgery with a longer recovery. It's not uncommon for patients like yourself to still have a lot of discomfort this far after surgery. Patients typically have a lot of pain for the first 1-2 weeks after surgery. The mommy makeover requires many hours in the operating room, it is normal to feel a lot of pain the first 8 days, with the help of the lymphatic drainage massages, analgesics and post operative,  recommendations by your plastic surgeon, you will recover as soon as possible, you must have a lot of patience to recover.

Thank you for your question.  A mommy makeover such as yours is a big operation.As such, recovery can take some time. At 8 days out, pain should be improving. You will feel soreness for several weeks, but it should be trending better. It is best to keep in close contact with your surgeon to know that you are progressing on pace. Everyone is different in the pace of their recovery. Your plastic surgeon will be in the best position to reassure you on your recovery.
