Long review alert. Sharing the review I would have wanted to read when I was doing my research.
TL:DR - I am a 39-year-old, mid-sized woman who has gained and lost weight several times, had a breast implant removal with fat transfer, vaser liposuction, and Renuvion, and I am very happy with my results. They were life-changing.
I waited just over a year (Surgery date: September 20th, 2024) to write this review. I cannot explain how pleased I am with my removal and fat transfer. Healing was bumpy, but over a year later, you can't tell that I had breast implants for almost 10 years. I'm not sure how, but my removal scars from Dr. Sieber look better than my original implant scars. I was so concerned that I would have sagging skin, and somehow my breasts just went back to "normal," but because I had fat transfer, they're better. And my abdomen? I have a smaller waist now that I did not have before, and according to my last DEXA scan, second only to my head, my core / trunk is the area of my body that has the highest percentage of lean muscle mass and lowest percentage of body fat.
CONTEXT + EXPERIENCE:
I had implants that were too large, caused physical pain, and started to look unusual on my body. Removing them took years off my body, and to everyone's surprise, my face. I knew that I didn't want to get implants again, and as I was also dealing with stubborn belly fat, fat transfer was a strong alternative that happened to necessitate liposuction. I went in very nervous, I thought my case would be more complicated by the fact that I am not thin, I am a person of color/have highly melanated skin, and I hadn’t had the best experience with scarring. I shared my concerns with Dr. Sieber (and every other surgeon I consulted with) openly, and if they're your concerns as well, I would recommend doing the same. It turns out these concerns aren’t unique at all, but they are very real, and it’s helpful to understand how your surgeon responds to and approaches them, as well as his or her experience with similar cases. Dr. Sieber had operated successfully on people with heavily pigmented skin (higher sensitivity to hyperpigmentation and, unfortunately, medical neglect) prior to me, directly addressed elevated risk and variations in outcomes in patients with higher than average BMIs, assured me that he would close my incision points himself, and overall responded and engaged professionally.
My breasts healed surprisingly quickly. Within the first week, I could lift my hands over my head and move normally. I had no pain. Liposuction was much more difficult, but Dr. Sieber and his staff were available for check-ins, questions, and comments. Dr. Sieber himself checked in on me. As I'd read online, liposuction recovery is painful/challenging, even with medication. It is not unbearable, but it is incredibly unpleasant. Getting up and down was difficult. My sister took care of me, and I also called in a nurse for one day.
Just over a year and three months later, and I love my breasts today more than I ever loved my breast implants. Additionally, I've lost ~25 pounds since the surgery, and not only did my breasts not deflate (grateful for this), but my lipo results / waistline look(s) even better. This surgery is singlehandedly one of the best decisions I've made in my life, and I only wish I'd done it sooner.
CONSULTATIONS / PRE-OP / BEDSIDE MANNER:
Choosing a surgeon is a very personal decision, so I'll share my process and what I optimized for. I consulted with three surgeons, all ranked very, very highly, including the surgeon who originally placed my implants. I had several visits with Dr. Sieber prior to deciding to move forward.
My focus was experience and expertise, professionalism, and my personal comfort level. Admittedly, I have to be really honest here: I was specifically told to manage my expectations around Dr. Sieber's bedside manner. That was a reasonable caution, but it isn't what I'm opting for in major, life-altering surgery. I assumed he would be very judgmental and rude, and he just wasn’t. As a person with a neurodivergent communication style (I don’t even think he knew this, as I never mentioned it) with anxiety around surgery, I value very direct communication, which is exactly what he delivered. This was both HELPFUL and necessary for me, not offensive. To this end, I thought the nurse who was there on the day of surgery could have been nicer / more empathetic, but I found Dr. Sieber himself to be a professional with relatively high EQ, which is what I was looking for. In my evaluation, I ranked him number two out of the three surgeons in bedside manner but number one in experience, professionalism, and comfort level. In my opinion, niceness without does not keep you alive if something goes wrong. Just a note that if you require someone who is overly nice and accommodating, you may judge this differently.
Dr. Sieber did not recommend or push a litany of add-on procedures. To my knowledge, he was not critical of any part of my body (the reverse is a major red flag in any surgeon btw). There was no sense of urgency around doing my surgery. I actually left my first consultation wondering if surgery was necessary at all. Initially, I asked about a tummy tuck with breast implant removal during my consult, but he assured me, more than once, that it was not necessary.
RISKS
I wanted a surgeon who would manage my expectations well. Dr. Sieber shared that fat transfers are not always successful, that a large percentage of the fat dies / fades, and that shape cannot be guaranteed. He also cautioned me that Renuvion (on the abdomen) may not be effective or could only show very limited improvement, and liposuction on a patient with above-average BMI could offer a sub-optimal outcome. I am so glad I knew all of this beforehand. While not critical, he did recommend waiting to reduce my BMI before proceeding with surgery (I was only one point over his cut off). I chose not to at the time, but as a result of the surgery found it much easier to lose weight afterward and have.
RESULTS
Breast implant removal and fat transfer: I LOVE my breasts. Some fat did die, and swelling (which contributes to early volume) went down, but my breasts still look great, somehow my breast shape looks better than it ever has, my symmetry looks near perfect (I initially got breast implants due to very small breasts and *significant* asymmetry), and the proportions look very natural. I did text Dr. Sieber in a panic about six weeks out when one breast looked larger than the other, but I believe that must have been due to swelling going down faster on one than the other. Today, they look very close to each other in symmetry. My scars are under my breasts and look like short, single lines. Aesthetically, they look much much much better than my original breast implant scars. It’s clear he listened to my concerns here. I embarked on a wellness journey since surgery and have lost around 25-30 pounds since. I’m not sure how, but my breasts did not deflate and somehow look better; the same is true for my liposuction.
Liposuction: Several people thought - and still think - I’ve had a BBL. I did not. I got liposuction of the abdomen and flanks only with Renuvion of the abdomen, and my silhouette looks much more feminine. I did not get any fat transferred to my backside, but my new contours (along with strength training) have contributed to a fuller look in my buttocks and an hourglass shape. My abs look very natural. My scars are small and hidden in my bikini line and bra strap. They are single small circles at each location, smaller than a penny.
Renuvion: I am not entirely sure it was worth it. Dr. Sieber was right in managing my expectations here. Improvement was relatively minimal. I have noticed that my skin is not as saggy as many patients I’ve seen online, and from certain angles, not noticeable, but I do still have some laxity from losing and gaining 45-50 pounds several times, that was not necessarily helped by liposuction. Now that I’m a year out and 25+ pounds lighter, I plan to go back for microneedling or laser treatments. I wouldn’t know what my stomach would have looked like had I got liposuction and not had Renuvion, so I’d recommend using your own judgment here.
Scarring: I didn’t have the patience for scar gel, and my scars healed fine. Short straight line under each breast, one <1 inch scar in bikini line, one <1 inch scar in bra line. I may get laser treatment in the future. None are visible in a bikini, and none bother me today.
WOULD I GO TO DR. SIEBER AGAIN?
Yes. Emphatically yes, even if just to get advice on an issue he himself may not directly address.
