Does Voluma create a stretched pocket beneath the skin and muscle?

Question

I like the look of Voluma, but do not want to loosen the underlying facial tissues in the midface, so have hesitations about getting it before I am older and really need it.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  In general the amount of Voluma placed for facial rejuvenation is not so great as to permanently stretch out the tissues of your face.  Additionally as the material dissolves very slowly your skin has the opportunity to recoil with it.  Be sure to see an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to discuss.

Only small amounts of JUVÉDERM Voluma are needed to enhance the midface, so permanent stretching of the skin or muscle should not be a concern. The effects of JUVÉDERM are only temporary and should not have any lasting effect on your facial structure, even if you continue getting touch-ups long term.

Voluma which is placed in the deep tissue just above the bone. Because it is placed between two areas subcutaneous tissue and periosteum in theory some space is created. However, the voluma loses its volume gradually over time. As a result of the gradual loss of Voluma, clinically we don't see resulting dead space.

Using Voluma at a younger age does not cause the underlying tissue to stretch or loosen prematurely. The amount used is so small that it will not create any permanent laxity and once it dissolves your features go back to the way it was before the filler was injected.

If you are young with good skin tone and elasticity, but without a defined cheekbone, Voluma can enhance the midface and give you a more elegant profile without "stretching" the skin.  The amount of volume needed would be minimal, most likely a fifth of a teaspoon, possibly two fifths or two syringes and it would be placed over the zygomatic arch of the face.  It is unlikely that this would "stretch" your skin.  If you are older with laxity the Voluma will create a "lifted" look and distract the loose skin by lifting it around the zygomatic arch of the midface.  When the filler is gone, the face generally returns to it's preinjection state.
