Medical data indicates that the only antibiotic dosing that prevents infection is the dose administered within one hour of the surgical incision. Like many other surgeons, I use this as a practice guideline with some exceptions, such as when implants are used. The recommendation you received sounds quite reasonable and in line with the modern standard of care.
Typically, a patient will be given one dose of antibiotics during the surgery, and that is probably enough. You should inquire as to your plastic surgeon's practice. Best wishes.
Thank you for your question. We normally prescribe antibiotics with a tummy tuck, however, every plastic surgeon has their own protocols. Regards,
This is a clean operation and so technically does not require antibiotics at all. Since the operation may last longer than 2 hours and some doctors use drains (I do not) a preoperative dose may be used and some continue them for days. Every pill is a little poison as well so they should be used with caution and for a purpose. Antibiotics after are usually not needed.
Thank you for the question. Each of us surgeons have different ways in handling post operation recovery since we have different experiences and preferences. Best to express your concern to your board-certified plastic surgeon so you'll have a better idea of why they don't prescribe anitbiotics. Best of luck, Dr. Michael Omidi.
