I have HSV 1, How will this affect me getting a Brazilian Butt Lift? Do I have to tell my surgeon? Could it cause complications?

HIV status by itself does not disqualify you from the surgery, although using disposable items for the surgery will increase the cost. In general, people with HIV are legally required to tell others if there's a chance they could be exposed to the virus. The rules vary from state to state, and there are a few federal regulations, too. You want to create trust between yourself and your plastic surgeon; withholding your heath status is not a good way to begin the relationship.

Yes, this is something that you need to discuss with your surgeon ahead of surgery and develop a plan of treatment. This type of infection may, in rare occasion, create problem (viral reactivation) after surgery not only by means of local lesions but (extremely rarely) systemic infection.  Starting antiviral medications several days before surgery can decrease the risk of postoperative reactivation. there should be trust between patient and surgeon and you should not keep secrets from your surgeon. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon and have an honest discussion. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.

Your provider must know about all past and present illnesses, surgeries, medications, etc., to determine if it is safe to proceed and if any precautions must be taken at the time of surgery. The presence of HSV 1 does not contraindicate cosmetic surgery.Tell your physician.Best wishes...

Hello. You should never keep information about your general health to your surgeon, for your own safey and safety of he medical staff. You may undergo surgery but with certain preventive meassures to prevent contamination of the surgical staff. not disclosing your medical history to your plastic surgeon is a bad idea. It’s asked for and it would be dishonest not to. You may want to ask yourself why are you in particular have a problem with this. Most people have trust and faith in their physicians and are comfortable disclosing this information. Half of adults in the United States have antibodies to HSV one just like you. That’s every other person. At least one and 10 have antibodies to HSV two.Disclosing your history can help your plastic charge and determine if any precautions need to be taken.nobody likes surprises so I suggest being open and discussing these things with your providers.Viruses are part of the evolutionary avant-garde.Nothing to be embarrassed about.What’s probably more important is finding out if you’re a good candidate for the procedure and working on finding the most talented provider for this procedure.Best, Mats Hagstrom MD

Thank you for your question. It is very important to share everything about your medical history and medications with your surgeon prior to surgery. It should not affect your pre-op lab work or the surgeon's decision to offer surgery. This is a fairly common condition and the medication can be taken before and after your procedure.
