Sleep apnea is a disorder where breathing becomes blocked or partly blocked during sleep. Common treatments include lifestyle changes (such as losing weight), CPAP breathing machines, nasal dilators, and surgery. Surgeries to treat sleep apnea may include uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (removing excess throat tissue), tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy (removing the tonsils or adenoids), tracheostomy (inserting a tube into the windpipe), double jaw surgery to increase the size of the airway, or palatal implants to keep soft palate tissue from blocking the airway.
