Surgery with hyperthyroidism - Does this make me a bad candidate for a mommy makeover?

Question

I am a 35yr old mother of 2, by C-section. 5’2, 120lbs, and have not fully stopped nursing. At my most resent annual examination, I was healthy aside from a vitamin D deficiency which was the result of a hyperactive thyroid I am currently undergoing further examination for. I was looking to set a date for March 2023… Does this alone, pending results of course, make me a bad candidate for a mommy makeover?

Providing that your diagnosis is confirmed and treatment established, it should not be a problem to proceed with elective surgery like MMO. Communication between your PCP, endocrinologyst and plastic surgeon should be established in this regard. Good luck.

You should be able to have the mommy makeover without a problem.  Usually hyperthyroidism is easily treatable by your primary doctor.  Once treated, just make sure your doctor is aware that you are going to have surgery.  Also,  make sure you have your thyroid levels checked.  Best of luck!

Once the hyperthyroidism is evaluated and treated, it should not be a problem during mommy makeover surgery.  Your surgeon would likely communicate with your endocrinologist to ensure that your thyroid levels are optimized prior to proceeding with surgery.

As long as your hyperthyroidism is medicated to normalize your hormone levels you should be a fine candidate. I work with my patients' endocrinologists to assure the most optimal procedure.

Personally I would wait until your primary care or endocrinologist gets your thyroid issues worked out and stable. Surgery is a stressor, if you are hyperthyroid, you could potentially go into a "thyroid storm" from the stress of surgery and this can be an emergency. 
Once you are done nursing, thyroid is settled out and working normally (can take weeks to months to sort this out) then the breasts will settle to your baseline breast size and the surgeon will not be operating on an engorged breast fresh from nursing (less of a moving target).
That is my 2 cents. The vit D deficiency is common in most of N. America, you can supplement with sunlight, vitamins and diet. Vit D is a cofactor for alot - bone health, immunity, skin health. So don't neglect it.

If your medical doctor gives approval for elective surgery, then you should be able to have this done. You do need to stop breast feeding 6 months prior to surgery on your breast.  March surgery may not be possible since you are still breast feeding.

Hyperthyroidism may be a result of a variety of conditions. The reason must be detected and treatment must be applied accordingly. I would advise you to have your diagnosis and treatment and become normothyroid. It is unhealthy to go into an elective surgery with high thyroid hormone levels. But there is more that three months to that date, anyway.
