I had a blood clot roughly 7 years ago after having a D&C. After blood work was performed it was ruled that it occurred from not taking the necessary precautions (getting on a 6 hour car ride immediately after that I slept through). I was placed on blood thinners for about a year. Moving forward I would really like a tummy tuck with lipo. Is this possible and safe? I’ve been having a problem finding drs .
Answer: Cleared by hematologist Hello and thank you for your question. With the limited information I have, I would initially say that any patient with a history of blood clot needs to be cleared by a hematologist before any elective procedure and would undergo additional bloodwork prior to surgery. In addition to the standard protocols to reduce the risk of blood clots, you would likely require postoperative injections of a blood thinning medication as well. Of course all of this would be determined based on your hematologist's recommendations as well as the big picture of your medical history and current medications and current health condition. Additionally you should consider the risks and benefits of the surgery and speak with your doctors about the safety of the procedure. Thank you and best of luck.

Answer: DVT/PE Risk Management Hi Lalak, This is a great question. It is important to not place patients at risk for "venous thromboembolism", because this is a potentially fatal event. However, screening with a Caprini risk assessment can help decipher how much risk a person carries. Also, a consultation with a hematologist could also help find underlying causes of clots. It sounds like you had an induced DVT. In my hands you would at least receive a blood thinner and counseling about activity around the time of surgery and only after obtaining a hematologist's recommendation and screening. This is for your safety. And then it would be a matter of weighing risk and discussing your options. Thank you, Dr. Kris Day

Answer: Am I a candidate? I would begin by visiting with your hematologist to discuss your interest in a tummy tuck and liposuction. If given medical clearance you can then schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon near you. Extra precautions may be recommended such as an overnight stay in the hospital or blood thinners after surgery.

Answer: Is tummy tuck & lipo safe for me after blood clot 7 years ago? Hi, Thank you for the question. Based on your previous history of a blood clot, you are at a higher risk than average patient for having another blood clot after surgery. Typically, hematologic evaluation is recommended in this situation prior to undergoing tummy tuck surgery, and sometimes you may be on a blood thinner after the surgery. I would recommend an in person evaluation by a Board-certified plastic surgeon to further discuss your concerns. I hope this helps.Best, Dr. Karanetz Dr. Irena KaranetzBreast Fellowship-TrainedBoard Certified Plastic Surgeon
