Voluma on a patient with eczema - is it risky?

Question

Is it okay to get voluma done if I have eczema on my face or is it risky? I usually have it under control, but it does flare up from time to time. I want to know if there be any adverse reactions because of this?

There shouldn’t be any interaction between your eczema and Voluma, so long as you receive treatment when you are not in an active phase of the disease. Ideally, the dermatologist who is rejuvenating your face with Voluma is the same one who is treating your eczema. If not, be sure to consult a board-certified dermatologist when you are ready for Voluma injections to be sure you are not treated in an area that is prone to flares.

Hello and thank you for your question!  Injecting voluma for patients who have dermatologic conditions is acceptable as long as the injections are not at the site of concern.  I would recommend an evaluation with a board certified injector who you may discuss your concerns and goals with. The experienced injector will certainly advise you of the proper time-frame to inject around any flare-up.  I hope this information helps and best of luck!

Thank you for sharing your question.  As long as your eczema has not caused skin breakdown due to scratching Voluma placement is theoretically safe to do.  That said it is best to have any irritation or tissue swelling at a minimum first in order to more reliably achieve your goals with Voluma placement.  Hope this helps.

Voluma XC is Hyaluronic Acid filler indicated to treat deep mid-face volume deficiency. All Dermal Fillers should be performed on clean, healthy skin as to avoid any infections. I would suggest waiting until your eczema is in remission, and only using Hyaluronic-Acid based Fillers so it may be reversed if a reaction were to arise.
Always discuss possible side-effect with your Expert Injector.

Use of fillers on skin that is irritated or inflamed, may carry a higher risk of infection.  Generally, it is recommended to avoid placing a needle in skin that is actively irritated, particularly if it involves loss or partial loss of the superficial layer of skin that is designed  to help protect from infection

As long as the eczema is not at the site of injection, I generally do not object to injecting Voluma for eczema patients.  Without an exam, it will not be possible to fully evaluate you and give you recommendations. Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons. Facial fillers like Juvederm Voluma is an injectable treatment that pokes through the skin with a needle to deliver the product at the appropriate level. Cleaning the skin prior to an injection is important to prevent problems like infection. Eczema is a skin condition that may have active flares. To be safe, I would avoid any injectables during an eczema flare. It would be best to check with your dermatologist who is familiar with your skin for a safe and happy result. Safety comes first.

Eczema is not an automatic contra-indication to having Voluma or any other filler. The main concern would be that if the skin is broken or inflamed at the time you have treatment there may be a risk of introducing infection. If you were to have treatment it would be sensible to do this at a time when the skin is under control.

Thanks for your question.  The presence of a dermatologic issue and the desire for filler are not conflicting but it would be wise to be under the care of a doctor who understands both the cosmetic and dermatologic issues.  As long as the eczema is not in the area of injection and is not affected by any of the products used to perform the injection, ie. topical anesthetic, topical antiseptics, you should be fine.  All the Best,  Alexis Parker MD
