Is pain medication necessary after a BBL?

Question

From what I researched, common medications for BBL recovery are anticoagulants, antibiotics, and analgesics. Is then, pain medication a necessity? Is the pain after a BBL so strong that medication is required? Thank you.

Pain medication is not necessary to take unless the patient is actually in physical pain. Patient's pain thresholds vary, and if a patient only has mild pain I suggest that they should only take paracetemol, as stronger medications might lead to fatigue or constipation.

Pain medication is optional after a liposuction with fat transfer to the buttock procedure. Some patients can tolerate the pain with over the counter medications such as Tylenol or Motrin, where others may need prescription strength narcotics such as Norco or Vicodin. Pain tolerance varies from individual to individual. Most patients experience the most discomfort for the first 3 to 4 days following surgery.  I typically use whatever medication a patient has used in the past that has had success.  If the patient has never had surgery or never used pain medication, I use oral narcotic meds of varying strengths.  The pain can be managed effectively, and this aspect should not deter you from surgery.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Pain medication is prescribed in an as needed capacity. Thus, if you do not need the medication you do not have to take it. Keep in mind that the analgesics are in fact pain medication.

Hello, and thanks for such a question. Pain after BBL is more a discomfort sensation than pain, but it varies from patient to patient.  Have in mind that you  enter to the OR healthy and with no issues at all, and then have a procedure perform in all your body contour that will led to inflammation.   Althoug pain medication is prescribe, is mostly to avoid discomfort and in an SOS basis, so if the patient do not feel like needing the medication she  or he should not take it.Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS)Member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS)

In general, patients are prescribed pain medications and most of them do use them. Some patients have high pain tolerance and are fine with Tylenol ES. Good luck!

I don't know of any surgeon who routinely gives anticoagulants after surgery except for very unusual cases.
The use of antibiotics has questionable validity.
There scientific evidence that a single dose of antibiotics immediately before surgery The lower infection rates to some degree.
Still, the great majority of plastic surgeons will give antibiotics to take for a few days after the procedure even though there is little scientific evidence that it is of any use.
Pain medication itself all for pain but it is certainly possible to recover after any surgical procedure without pain medication if you're willing to put up with this covered.
Ibuprofen goes a long ways to control pain after surgery.
In my experience most patients use narcotic pain medications for 1 to 2 days after these type of procedures.
The pain is not terrible but it's definitely somewhat uncomfortable for the first few days.
As you may know the United States is suffering from an opioid dependent epidemic.
This is in great deal I result of doctors over prescribing pain medication.
Can years ago it was a great question for doctors to prescribe more narcotics.
At that time pain was called the "fifth vital sign"
Now there's a backlash to cut way back on the use of narcotic pain medication.
You can always try going with non-opiate pain medications and ask for a prescription just in case.
