Are there any tricks for telling the difference between the two on yourself? I've had 2 kids, and I have a lot of SubQ fat (which I'm hoping to lose). When I move my fat over, my belly is a little hard and sticks out (especially in upper abdomen and where my c-scection scar is) but I can see/feel hip bone and potential flatness. Can anyone help me figure out if I've got fat underneath or it's just my stretched out and abused abs that are out of shape?

Great self diagnosis! Yes this little weird thing sticking out is indeed a hernia. Should be easily "reducible" i.e. you can push it in. You also have a small diastasis just above and below the hernia. Since you have an awesome six pack you can see the muscle split a little in that area, and...
Many surgeons recommend compression stockings during and after surgery. You should ask your surgeon what they recommend for how long to wear them. It is also very important to be getting in and out of bed and walking periodically after surgery as this also helps to prevent DVT.
