Breast augmentation affect on tennis serve and overall play?

Question

I have already asked about recovery time but am curious as to opinion/fact regarding the affect of the under the muscle breast augmentation procedure on my overall tennis play and overhead tennis serve. I am worried that the detachment of the pec muscle will weaken and make my swing will feel awkward even after healing and that this will affect my serve, power and overall play. I am getting a full C cup and will have about 8-10 weeks to recover before I have to be back on the courts every day.

12345an.    Your first serve should be safe! Only a small portion of your chest muscle is divided for breast augmentation under the muscle and after full recovery and after you were regain strength postoperatively your tennis game should not change.  Especially if you do not choose excessively large implants. I do not recommend that you play tennis or perform any physical activities or cardio for four weeks after surgery. It may take as long as six months for your body to adjust to the implants, so your tennis game may suffer at the beginning, but return to normal after that time.  Be certain to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon. Hello and thank you for your question.  The
best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation.  I advise my patients that they may return to sports such as tennis 6 weeks after surgery, so your timeline should be okay and it not should have any longterm effects on your tennis serve.  The size, profile, and shape of the
implant is based on your desired breast size/shape, your chest wall
measurements, and soft tissue quality.  This decision should
be based on a detailed discussion with equal input from both you
and your surgeon.   Make sure you specifically look
at before and after pictures of real patients who have had this surgery
performed by your surgeon and evaluate their results.   The most
important aspect is to find a surgeon you are comfortable with. I recommend
that you seek consultation with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon who
can evaluate you in person.

In my experience breast augmentation has had no effect on any of my sports players. I actually have a couple of triple crown body builders that returned to their full pre-surgery workouts by the 8th week.

Thank you for your question.  One option , assuming that you have adequate soft tissue coverage, would be to place the implant in a subFascial pocket.  This pocket lies just above the muscle but under the fascia ( the layer immediately superficial to the muscle).  This I find, gives similar protection to a subMuscular placement without the need to detach the muscle.  I use it frequently in my athletic patients.  Hope this helps

I perform the majority of  breast augmentation under the muscle, and the muscle is always detached a bit along the inferior pole so that it sits properly.  After you heal, they should not impact your overall strength.

Good questions. There is not usually any detachment or destruction of the pectoralis muscle during a breast augmentation. Interference with tennis would be more related to an excessive enlargement. Consider your choice of sizes carefully. Several years ago I had a professional golf player who came to me when a cameraman told her she needed to do something about her breasts to continue as a professional. It seems whenever she swung the club her breast "jumped" and the camera would pick that up. A change of position was all that was indicated. You could have the same problem. I do not agree with surgeons who advocate destruction or detachment of the muscle until this phenomenon is eliminated. An overall better choice is the subfascial placement of the implant. This was invented 20 years ago in Brazil by a plastic surgery professor (Ruth Graf) and is now the majority implant technique in South America. This procedure lifts the outer covering of the pec muscle (fascia) and places the implant in that pocket. This eliminates the motion deformity and gives additional protection from edge show, ripples or wrinkles. The technique is slowly catching on in this country. I have done over 600 satisfactory procedures and recommend you take the time to find a surgeon in your area that does this. Good luck.

Why put them under the muscle. We put them under to avoid rippling with saline implants, with the newer silicone, over is very often the way to go. that in no way should affect your tennis game. You need to be seen in person to know for sure what is best for you.

I think if you are very concerned then the best compromise and safest option might be placing the implants over the muscle and leaving your muscle intact and attached.  Detaching the muscle and changing your anatomy will theoretically compromise/weaken some of its function and there is no guarantee that your tennis performance will be unaffected.  But if you are not playing tennis at a very high level, maybe that that change will not be as significant on your game.  Hope that helps!

Breast augmentation under the muscle will possibly lead to some weakness and pulling during overhead serving or hitting the ball. For athletes that need full use of their Pectoralis muscles, we use Silicone implants-SMOOTH, over the musclewhich can give a more natural result and not cause any damageto the muscles.
