How much botox do I need for my masseter muscles? (Photos)

Typically a starting dose of 15-20 units is used on each side and injected directly into the masseter muscle. Care must be taken to respect anatomic landmarks to avoid unwanted injection into muscles of facial expression (i.e. zygomaticus major and depressor anguli iris) that will have an effect on smiling.

I typically inject 20 units of Botox or 60 units of Dysport in each masseter muscle at six month intervals. RegardsDr. J

best advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation.  Botox in the masseter can work extremely well in the right patient.  I usually inject 20-30U per side every 4-6 months.   The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you are
comfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualified

Botox for masseter hypertrophy or enlargement is done 3-6 months apart typically. Starting done is 10 units per side (4shots) but some patients do require more. in order to keep the muscle atrophied (shrunk) it is important to do the whole series of treatments, usually 3 in total. 

I would recommend using 10-15 units on each side to start.  I would then have you evaluate the Massenter in 7-10 days to see if you need more.  It is always easier to add more when needed, rather than overdoing it and unable to take out the Botox if it is too much.  Please make sure you see someone who is well experienced in this area because there are quite a few who do not know how.  Typically the results last 3-9 months before another treatment is needed.

Thanks for this question.The masseter muscles require a significant amount of Botox as they are quite large. I would say that the average dose, currently recommended, is about 15-30 units per side. Most patients in my practice repeat this every 6 months depending on their response and the aesthetic outcome desired.

Thank you for your question. The jaw muscles are very strong thus, it can take a bit of Botox to have an effect in that area. It can take up to 25 units per side. However this can be adjusted if one side is stronger than the other. Botox results last about 3-4 months. I recommend having a consultation with an expert injector to determine the best treatment plan for you. Best of Luck!

The masseter muscle is one of the muscles activated during chewing. It’s located at the “angle of the mandible”, or “angle of the jaw”. Masseter muscle hypertrophy is enlargement of the masseter muscle, and can contribute to a harsh, square look at the angle of the jaw. Botox can be used to relax this muscle, and to soften the look of the lower face. I usually start with 50 units of botox (25 units on each side). When Botox is used to relax the facial muscles that cause fine line, the maximum effect is seen in 7-10 days. When Botox is used to reduce masseter muscle hypertrophy, the maximum effect is not seen for 3 months. Results can last up to 9 months. I recommend repeat injection every 6 months if you would like to maintain your results. 

I typically inject between 24-30 units per masseter muscle as a starting point. Based on the results, and patient preference, I may in subsequent visits adjust the dosing.
