Can I have a dermal filler (Voluma) in the cheek if I have abscessed teeth? (Photo)

Question

I had a bad infection where I got a dermal filler on my cheek and the nurse blamed it on the abscessed teeth I had . I do had already a broken tooth then but no infection there at the time I had the injection done . Who is to blame here ? The nurse or my broken tooth ?

Thank you for sharing your question. If a known abscess of your tooth was suspected Voluma should not have been placed into your cheek / face for risk of spreading the infection.  That said it is impossible for anyone not present to know whether this condition existed.

It's difficult to determine without an in-person evaluation. I recommend following up with a cosmetic dermatologist for a formal evaluation. I recommend injections with cannulas to limit complications. Best, Dr. Emer

It's hard to say in this case as you may have had an infection starting around the broken tooth when you had the Voluma treatment done.  The tooth infection/abscess may not have been apparent at the time of your injection but magnified once you received Voluma.  I assume you had Voluma on the other side of your face also without any complications, so this could have occurred possibly from a brewing infection on the treated side.  Definitely have this treated right away.

If the infected tooth is the same side and an upper tooth, possibly.Not likely if the infection was from the lower teeth or the other side.

Thank you for your question.  I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing complications after your recent Voluma treatment.  It's difficult to make exact recommendations without assessing you in person.  That said, generally speaking, dental abscesses do increase your risk of infection with filler injections.  I would recommend that you follow-up with a cosmetic dermatologist or plastic surgeon with extensive experience in the treatment of filler complications.  I hope you feel better soon.

If you have an ongoing infection in a part of your body (like an abscessed tooth) then injecting a filler may put you at higher risk of that filler getting infected. This can be very problematic with Voluma especially, since it's a longer-lasting filler. Make sure it gets treated appropriately by discussing with your doctor.
