Juvederm Ultra Plus XC lip injections lumps? (photo)

Question

I got Juvéderm injections three weeks ago. Half a syringe. Initially my lips looked amazing and I was excited to get an additional 1/2 syringe put in for full lips. I went to see my injector two weeks after the injections because my lips were still lumpy and bumpy. When I smile you can see the lumps. She told me to keep massaging them and I will go back next week for final assessment. I know I will have to get them dissolved. What caused these lumps? Is it the injectors fault?

Thank you for sharing your question and photographs and I am sorry that your current results are not what you anticipated.  Your lumps are due to filler that was placed too superficially and after two weeks should be dissolved.  Hope this helps.

Dissolving solutions will get rid of all the filler and you will go back to normal. Consider direct excision of the very superficial lumps. This will leave the rest of the filler intact. Next time, consider Refyne/Defyne as these do not lump.Good luck. Dr. ALDO

This is most likely superficially placed filler. You can have it reversed with hyaluronidase. I hope this helps.

This is because of improper injection technique and superficial placement of filler. It takes a great deal of knowledge of anatomy, artistry and skill to perform lip injections. Though I use Juvederm Ultra Plus in the lips frequently, it would not have been my first choice for you based on your before pictures. I would recommend dissolving the filler with Hylauronidase and starting over with a more experienced physician injector. Best wishes.

Thicker, more cohesive fillers like Juvederm Ultra Plus were designed to be injected into deeper areas.  The FDA has not tested this filler in the lips, and it is therefore being used in an “off-label” manner.  That is not to say that it cannot be safely used in the lips. I have done this myself on occasion, however it is not my preferred filler for the lips. When this filler is used in the lips it can be much less forgiving of irregularities and can cause lumps.  It is also more difficult to resolve these lumps by massage techniques. The injector needs to be very experienced. There are several fillers that are specifically indicated for lip injection.  Discuss your concerns with your injector. It is also reasonable to get a second opinion regarding these treatments from a different practitioner. Best wishes!

Lumps or nodules can appear shortly after treatment in the form of well-confined palpable lesions, which can result from injection in areas of thin soft-tissue coverage (e.g. eyelids, nasojugal region, and lip), injection of too much material, clumping of the filler, or dislocation by movement of the muscles. Measures to avoid visibility of the implanted material include firm massage. Hyaluronidase, to "dissolve" the filler can be used. Sometimes a small incision and drainage is needed. Hope this helps!

From your picture it looks like the Juvederm was injected too superficially creating the lumpiness.  If you don't do anything, they will eventually resolve.  Alternatively, they can be dissolved in 24 hours with an injection of hyaluronidase.  Best.

The lumps you have described are filler that was injected too superficially.  It can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.  Sometimes patients experience lumps after injections, but they often resolve during the first two weeks.  Since yours are present beyond that time they will likely need to be dissolved.

Your lumps are caused by too superficial injections of the filler. It appears, regrettably,  to be a common occurrence seen on this forum. It doesn't matter at all which type of Juvederm was injected, what matters is where, how and why filler is being injected. The best chance to find adequate injector is through the word of mouth; avoid online marketing or self-promotions. Try to learn as much as you can about the aesthetics and beauty of feminine lips, look at the lip images on classical paintings and sculptures, compare to yours and assess the difference. Don't be afraid to ask questions until you are satisfied. You will be surprised how much you know. Good luck!
